Vol. 41 No 8 Vintage MG Car Club August 2007

The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 8,

at the Pizza Joynt, 39 W. North Ave., Northlake, IL, 8 p.m. – 708-562-5334

As you settle into your easy chair, cold beverage in hand, to read this Viewpoint, the calendar will read “August.” August?? Holy smokes! Time is running out to make plans for that day-trip, or car show, in the MG. Make sure you have plenty of 20W-50, sun block and all the spanners the tool box will hold, and mark your calendar.

Sunday, August 5th, Union, Illinois, 17th Annual Vintage Transport Extravaganza. This is big (only the first 700 vehicles get dash plaques) and cheap (only $5). If you pre-register you also get free train tickets. Registration form is included in this newsletter.

Saturday, August 11th, Momence, Illinois, President’s Picnic! Since I live in a condo with no parking the members do not get to drip oil on my driveway and trash my house. Last year about 12 members caravanned to Momence for the Gladiolus Festival and car show. The show is on an island full of mature trees: shade for everyone. The host will have a special spot for our Club. We must be there by 10:30 a.m. To pre-register (and pay $12), contact Ernie Hart at 815-472-6207, or obtain a form from .

Sunday, August 19th, Aurora, Illinois, 17th Annual Orphan Auto Picnic. This show is free! It is on the banks of the Fox River and many of the cars will be able to park in the shade. Way cool. And it’s free. Information is included in this newsletter. Because it is free the show section fills up by 12 noon so do not be late. Even your pet gets in

for free.

Sunday September 2nd, Naper Settlement, Naperville, Illinois. This show is limited to 230 cars and they will ding you for $20. Apparently it sells out through pre-registration. Lucky for you a registration form is included herein.

Sunday September 9th, Morraine Valley Community College, The British Car Union show, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Club will have a booth and we will be lined up together. Raffles and tech sessions will be going on all day. Registration is $15. Regis-tration forms are available from Rey Navarro or from .

Be there or be square.

Minutes of the July 11, 2007

Meeting of the

Vintage MG Car Club of Chicago

The meeting was called to order at 8:05 p.m. by President Larry Carlson.

In attendance were 20 members, four T-types and

a B.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved by motion.

After a brief delay, Ric Maitzen reported a treasury balance of $9,075.55, with a full report to be published in the Viewpoint.

Bill Dobeus reported 95 members have paid their annual dues,

Lou Louchious was absent; therefore there was no report on regalia.

OLD BUSINESS

The June visit to John Welch’s garage was both educational and enjoyable. Thanks to John and Holly for hosting this event.

Rick Rausch captured 1st prize and Bill Cole got a 3rd in the Fourth of July parade. Congratulations guys!

NEW BUSINESS

Rey Navarro is working on a get-together August 18th with an individual in North Riverside who has an impressive collection of classic cars.

The President’s Picnic will be held Saturday, August 11th in conjunction with the Momence Gladiolus Festival.

It was suggested that our club might do more with the MG Club of Chicago.

Jerry Cihak has a copy of the Shadetree Motors inventory for those looking for bargains.

Ric Maitzen reported that our club insurance premium is $220.

Members were asked to help find advertisers for the newsletter. Ads are available for $50.

TECHNICAL TOPICS

Gerry Risner presented meeting attendees with a puzzle – a car which stopped and wouldn’t start. It was getting gas and the spark and timing were fine. Ultimately it was determined that the starter wasn’t turning fast enough.

Bill Cole brought in an air filter with a blackened interior. It turned out it was inhaling exhaust from a cracked exhaust manifold.

Greg Hoeft brought in a broken rod and piston from his engine. He reported that the rods were installed reversed in the engine. All of the pistons were scuffed on the thrust face because the little squirt of oil was pointed the wrong way.

PROGRAM

Jennifer Smith brought in the restored gas tank from her TC restoration project.

Upon motion made and seconded, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Win Gould, Secretary

Gas Tank Repair and Sending Unit Install

My gas tank was in pretty bad shape so it was one of the first things I had to address. I took it to the local radiator shop, Al’s Radiator in Brookfield (see their contact information below). Once I removed the tank from the car (See Picture A), I thought it was fairly solid and not too badly rusted. Even though it seemed solid, it was loaded with scaly rust on the inside, and when the radiator shop poured acid in it, it ate right through making pinholes in the bottom. After the acid cleaning, they cut a hole in the back to clean things out better (the tank has baffles in it making it hard to get at all the surfaces inside – See Picture B). The inside of the tank was coated with epoxy after the entire tank was sand blasted. If your gas tank is in need of repair, you can contact Al’s Radiator at the address below.

I am also installing the sending unit (See Picture C) using a product called Seal-All.

This Month’s Program:

Model pull type wheeled road grader presentation by Bill Dobeus

Here’s a preview from Bill regarding his presentation:

“I obtained a model pull type wheeled road grader from my father’s best friend, Marshall Noel, in 1940. The grader was pulled by a crawler tractor. The model grader is 34 inches in overall length. The condition of the grader was very poor when I found it in Mr. Noel’s basement. The front axel was broken and numerous parts were missing.

The first thing I did years later was to sandblast it in Sandy MacArther’s shop. A few years later I started the process of repairing broken parts and designing new parts for those missing. I tried to identify the model without success. I learned that a model of this type is known as a salesman’s sample.

I selected “Persian orange” for the color because Allis-Chalmers equipment was painted that color. My father worked for Allis-Chalmers early in his career.”

What did you think this was?

[pic]

Jerry Cihak tells us it’s a Riley.

Pictured is the Riley Special. Originally, Riley was a bicycle company. In 1896 William Riley took over and in 1905, the first Riley cars were produced. In the late 1930s the company began to flounder and in 1938 it was purchased by Lord Nuffield.

From the Editor

By Greg Hoeft

I received a note from Herman Buttron just last week. The hand written note started out saying that he had found a source for T series parts. Well, at first I thought that Herman had heard that I was in the market for some bits to repair old TC1415, the Venerable Vernette, but then, as I read on, I realized that it was an unabashed testimonial for a fellow up in Sidney, British Columbia (that’s in Canada you flatlanders).

Herman was on the look-out for an MG Y type single carb manifold and a Jack-all system. He found them at Hugh Pite’s “Barn full of T series parts” and wanted me to write about it.

Now I had known of Hugh because of my association with the T- web group so I pinged him with an email. In a millisecond Hugh answered with what he has been up to. He says, “I am not a dealer but have been collecting "T" series MGs and parts since the mid 60s. I have a large collection of parts that are filling up a 1,000 sq. ft. barn and would like to reduce this somewhat. This collection would include most everything for post war Ts with the exception of a few items.

“What comes to mind would be a F27 foglight, rear TC fenders, TC air cleaner cannister, TD Mk2 air cleaner assembly and shocks, TF seats and (of course) a TF1500 engine. I am sure there are other parts I do not have or are in too poor a condition to use. At last count there were 15 or so engine blocks and about the same number of TD/F gearboxes. There is a shortage of good crankshafts. As well as the "T" parts I expect to have some J2 stuff that I will be selling after this restoration is completed. In addition there are some 50s Jaguar XK and sedan parts that are cluttering up the storage area.

“It is always a worry when selling parts that the expectations of the buyer are not the same as the seller, which reminds me, any part may be returned provided the shipping cost is covered both ways.”

If you need a part, you can contact:

Hugh Pite

570 Seacliff Rd.

Sidney B. C. V8L5W1, Canada

Or email Hugh at: Jenntoo@shaw.ca

And don’t forget about our member John Gasenica when looking for parts. John has a number of T series parts for sale. See John’s ad elsewhere in the Viewpoint. An updated list has been posted on our website, . John tells me the items for sale are from a 36 year “GasMac” (if you know you know, if you don’t you don’t) collection of parts. John has owned and restored a ’48 TC, ’50 and ‘51 TD, ‘53TD MKII, and a ’54 TF. John says, “The rockin’ chair got me! The TC is still with me but the parts gotta go.”

And finally from the “to be avoided at all costs department.”

This guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving. She says, “hello!”

He's rather taken aback because he can't place exactly where he knows her from. So he says,

"Do you know me?" To which she replies, "I think you're the father of one of my kids."

Now his mind travels back to the only time he was with a woman other than his wife and he says, "My God, are you the stripper from my Bachelor Party? The woman I stayed with the night before my wedding?" She looks into his eyes and says calmly, "No, I'm your son's teacher."

Well, I think it’s time to head out to the garage and work on the MG.

For Sale:

1965 Jaguar 3.8S Saloon

Cream with red leather interior. Body sound, jacking points in good shape, engine runs well, 25K miles on speedometer. Chrome decent. Automatic transmission.

Drive it as it is or restore it. Original tool kit and original owner’s manual. $6,500 OBO.
