Fun for all ages at inaugural Fall Fest

The inaugural University Heights Fall Fest will take place on Sunday, October 6th from 1 to 5 p.m. at Walter Stinson Community Park. Don't worry about missing the Cleveland Browns game, as they're playing on Monday Night that week. Jersey, the nation's best Springsteen cover band, will headline Fall Fest with a concert at 3 p.m. For the kids, Fall Fest will feature inflatables, Balloons by Blake, face painting, and pumpkin painting. For the adults, Beachwood Boot Camp will present an exercise class at 1:00 p.m. There will be shopping, as dozens of local artists and small businesses will have booths at the festival. Our vendors will include Dude About Town photography, Milan's Bead Company, LeLux Jewelry & Accessories, Blissful Brilliance, Penny's Pals, Sweets by Kimmi, Enchanted, MishMoccs, Altemus Leatherwork, and Little Red Bird Custom Cookies. And be sure to show up hungry, as Ye Old School Treats-n-Eats will be serving up stuffed funnel cakes, novelty ice creams and other carnival food out of a retro school bus. Prior to Fall Fest, the Fire Department will host their annual Open House, (see story, pg. 2).

PARTY LIKE IT'S 1975. Rock and roll historians will remember Bruce Springsteen played University Heights back in 1975. Tim Russert produced the show at John Carroll University, and Kid Leo from WMMS served as the emcee. To celebrate the '75 show, Jersey will perform songs from the JCU set list, including Spirit in the Night, Thunder Road, She's the One, and Born to Run.

Gabriella Kreuz returns to host Civic Awards. Cleveland Indians in-park host and John Carroll University alumni Gabriella Kreuz will return to University Heights on November 13th to host the Civic Awards. Tickets for the dinner and ceremony are on sale now at . The Civic Awards will honor the people who are making our city an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

Open House kicks off Fire Prevention Week

Chief Robert Perko and the University Heights Fire Department invite you and your family to their station for a day of fun and education for all ages on Sunday, October 6th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Celebrate Fire Prevention Week with fire safety talks, station tours, food and activities. Kid activities will include inflatables and a coloring contest. University Hospitals will provide health screenings and food, including Kosher options, while the American Red Cross will distribute fire detector batteries. The 2019 Fire Prevention Week runs from October 6th through the 12th. Nationally, this year's theme is "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape--Plan and Practice Your Escape." The first Presidential proclamation of Fire Prevention Week was made in 1925 by Calvin Coolidge. The fire station is located at 3980 Silsby Road, right next to City Hall. Fire safety tips will be featured on the city's social media accounts throughout Fire Prevention Week. After you attend the fire department's Open House, walk over to The Walt for the city's inaugural Fall Fest.

Jamaican-Me Tan launches food drive

Shari Garzone and the staff at Jamaican-Me Tan is hosting their annual food drive to benefit the Cleveland Food Bank. Throughout October, you can drop off food and non-perishable items at Jamaican-Me Tan (14488 Cedar Road). Needed food items include beef stew, canned soup, canned tuna, peanut butter, and cereal. In demand non-food items include deodorant, laundry detergent, toilet paper, shampoo, tooth brushes, and tooth paste. In return for a contribution, you will receive a coupon for 10% off a package or bottle of lotion.

Reregister if you are on the voter purge list

The Ohio Secretary of State has updated the list of registered voters in our state. The stated goal of their effort was to remove voters who have moved, passed away, or are inactive voters (defined as those who have not voted in the last five years). Over 400 voters in University Heights were on the voter purge list. Please take the time to review the list on the city's website, . If your name is on the list, you may wish to reregister to vote. To reregister, go to the Cuyahoga County Board of Election's website at boe.cuyahogacounty.us. There, you'll be able to register on line or by mail. City Hall sent letters to residents on the purge list for not voting since 2012. Many have voted in Presidential election years, but chose to sit out the 2016 election. To vote in future elections, they will need to reregister to vote. Vowing to "shake up the block," co-owners Kyler Smith and Michael Roberts, along with Chef Jameel Chambers recently opened The Sauce Boiling Seafood Express on Cedar Road to big crowds of hungry customers and rave reviews on-line. The Sauce serves seafood boil in-a-bag to go. Their seafood selection includes shrimp, crab legs, lobster tails, mussels, and crawfish, while their sauces include Sweet Cajun, Famous Dash, Garlic Butter, Jamaican Jerk, and Vegan Garlic Butter. The restaurant opens each day at 11 a.m., and stays open late. The Sauce is open until 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, midnight on Saturday, and until 10 p.m. on Sunday, The Sauce joins Lox, Stock, and Brisket, and the soon to open Ella Mae's Soul Food, making this block of Cedar Road a new destination for foodies from all over Northeast Ohio.
