Chronological List of Irish Arrivals

The following is a partial list of early arrivals in “The Margaree’s”. Dates are approximate as several of the early settlers arrived elsewhere before settling in “The Margaree’s”.

Mar 18 1791 David REILY received land grant on SE side of the N.E. branch of the Margaree River, at Margaree Forks

May 04 1791 George HALL received land grant on south side of the N. E. branch of the Margaree River, Margaree Forks.

1804 Maurice FITZGERALD Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 59, 14 years on the Island, from Ireland, situated in Broad Cove, farmer, married, with 12 children. Maurice (1758-1834) was married to Jane HEFFERNON (1770- ). Their son, Dennis FITZGERALD, who was baptized on Aug 30 1812 was the first Irish name to appear in Margaree Parish Records.

1804. William FITZGERALD Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 24, 14 years on the Island, from Nova Scotia, situated in Broad Cove, farmer, single. On Sep 25 1816,William FITZGERALD received a land grant at South West Margaree.

1807. Miles McDANIEL Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 27, 11 years on the Island, from Ireland, situated in Broad Cove, Merchant, married with 4 children. Myles was son of Moses McDANIEL and Poll DOYLE. On Nov 19 1807, Myles applied for a land grant at St. Peter’s, Cape Breton. On Sep 17 1811, Myles (1788-1856) was married to Rebecca Smith in Port Hood, NS. They came to Margaree Harbor and then Margaree Forks in 1815 where he was the first Irish settler. Myles and Rebecca had 11 children. On Mar 11 1818, Miles McDANIEL received land grant on south side of the N. E. branch of the Margaree River, Margaree Forks.

1812. Michael MURPHY (1786-1851) of Wexford County, Ireland married Sarah PENNELL (1783-1863) in Newfoundland in 1806. They came from Newfoundland to Antigonish first then came to Margaree Harbour about 1812 and North East Margaree about 1821. Michael and Sarah had 10 children. Their son, James MURPHY received a land grant at Murphy on Dec 15 1849. Their son, John MURPHY received a land grant at Big Brook on May 01 1855.

1815. Patrick COWDY Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 27, 3 years on the Island, from Ireland, situated in Broad Cove, tailor, married with 1 children. Patrick married Mary INGRAHAM of “The Margaree’s”. She was daughter of Hezekiah INGRAHAM. On Jun 23 1846, Patrick COADY received land grant at Portree.

1816. James DUNN Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 26, 1 1/2 years on the Island, from Ireland, situated in Margarie, farmer, married with 1 child. James, son of William DUNN and Mary LAHY of Tipperary, Ireland settled in North East Margaree after living for a time at South West Margaree. On Jun 23 1817, he married Jane FITZGERALD (1791-1876), daughter of Maurice FITZGERALD and Jane HEFFERNAN. James and Jane had 10 children. On Dec 21 1869 and Jun 02 1870 respectively, Andrew and Maurice Dunn, sons of James and Jane, received land grants at Big Brook.

1816. Michael BURNS Name appears on List of Inhabitants in the Settlements of Margarie-Broad Cove, 12TH May 1818, age 27, 1 1/2 years on the Island, from Ireland, situated in Broad Cove, farmer, married.

1816. Phillip BROWN arrived from Silversprings, Wexford County, Ireland. On Jan 21 1823 he married Marie LeJEUNE in “The Margaree’s”. She was from the Bras d’Or area. They settled in the Lake O’Law area. Phillip and Marie had 6 children.

1816 John COLLINS arrived from Tipperary, Wexford County, Ireland . He married Catherine MacDONALD in “The Margaree’s”. They settled in South West Margaree. John and Catherine had 3 children.

1817. James BROWN (1794-1889) arrived from Silversprings, Wexford County, Ireland . On Feb 10 1827 he married Anastasie LeBLANC ( - 1836) in “The Margaree’s”. On Jan 09 1837 he married Mary TOMPKINS, (1809- ) Enniscorthy, County Wexford, IRELAND in “The Margaree’s”. No children.

Before 1821 John COADY ( 1786- 1831) came from County Tipperary, Ireland. John’s first wife died in Ireland. John and his first wife had 1 son who came to Cape Breton. John married a second time to Catherine MacDONALD, from Antigonish. John and Catherine had 10 children. On Dec 06 1838 Catherine COADY (Widow of John Coady) and John, Donald, Martin, Hugh, Peter, James, Mary, Anne and Catherine Coady, her children, received a land grant at South West Margaree.

1821. James CARROLL (1801- ) came from the Isle of Saints to the County of Antigonish and later moved to South West Margaree. James was married to Isabel Cameron. James and Isabel had 5 children. On Aug 20 1863, James CARROLL received a land grant at South West Margaree.

1822. John FLEMMING (1788- ) arrived from Carrick, Ireland. He stopped in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island on his way to Cape Breton. In 1827, he married Margaret BURNS from Kerry Ireland in Newfoundland. John and Margaret had 4 children.

1824. Moses “Mogue” DOYLE (1764-1839) arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . In 1806 after returning to Ireland from St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, he married Judith O’NEILL ( -1817) in Ireland. Mogue and Judith had 4 children. Daughter Mary died at birth with her mother, Judith. Mogue married a second time to Mary Ann LAWLOR (1787- 1849) in Ireland. No children. Mogue came to Cape Breton by himself at age 60 to receive an inheritance from his Uncle Edward HAYES of Port Hood. He was joined by his son James, his daughter Sarah and his second wife Mary Ann in 1828. Anna, daughter of Mogue came to North America a few years later.

1828 Mary Ann (Lawlor) DOYLE (1787-1849), wife of Mogue DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland with her step-children James and Sarah.

1828 James DOYLE (1807-1887), son of Mogue DOYLE and Judith O’NEILL, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . He married Margaret MURPHY (1813-1890) in “The Margaree’s”. Margaret was daughter of Michael MURPHY and Sarah PENNELL and was born in Antigonish before her family came to “The Margaree’s”. James and Margaret had 11 children. On Oct 29 1844, James DOYLE, Yeoman, received land grant on south side of the N. E. branch of the Margaree River, along Doyle’s Road, Margaree Forks.

1828. Sarah DOYLE (1814-1895), daughter of Mogue DOYLE and Judith O’NEILL, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . On Feb 12 1838, Sarah married James COADY (1816-1896) in “The Margaree’s”. James was son of Martin COADY and Julia McCARTHY and was born in Carrick on Suir, County Tipperary, IRELAND before his family came to “The Margaree’s”. Sarah and James had 14 children.

1828. Martin COADY (1790-1831) and his brother Peter COADY(1806-1831) came from County Tipperary, Ireland. Martin married Julia McCARTHY in Ireland. Martin and Julia had 8 children. On Oct 25 1836, Judith COADY(Widow of Martin COADY) received a land grant on Coady road, Margaree Forks.

1828. Thomas COAKLEY (1783-1867) arrived from Ireland with his wife, Ann DOYLE (1801-1881). Ann was a daughter of James DOYLE and Ann DOYLE and a niece of Mogue DOYLE. Thomas and Ann had 12 children.

1828. James DOYLE arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland with his family. He married Ann DOYLE in Ireland. Ann was a sister of Mogue DOYLE. James and Ann had 3 children, who were born in Ireland.

After 1828 Anna DOYLE (1812-1897), daughter of Mogue DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland. She married James MURPHY (1813-1889) in “The Margaree’s”. James was son of Michael MURPHY and Sarah PENNELL and was born in Newfoundland before his family came to “The Margaree’s”. Anna and James had 11 children.

1829 Mary (Doyle) TOMPKINS (1765-1847 ), wife of Michael TOMPKINS, sister of Mogue DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland with her five children.

1829 Patrick TOMPKINS (1800-1866), son of Michael TOMPKINS and Mary DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland. In 1832, he married Bridget FITZGERALD( 1808-1873), widow of James DUNN, in “The Margaree’s”. Patrick and Bridget had 8 children. On Jul 13 1853, Patrick TOMPKINS received a land grant at Big Brook.

1829 Nicholas TOMPKINS (1802-1894), son of Michael TOMPKINS and Mary DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . In 1832, he married Sarah McDANIEL (1812-1869), in “The Margaree’s”. Sarah was daughter of Myles McDANIEL and Rebecca SMITH. Nicholas and Sarah had 9 children. On Oct 12 1846, Nicholas TOMPKINS, Yeoman, received a land grant at Big Brook.

1829 James TOMPKINS (1803- ), son of Michael TOMPKINS and Mary DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . He married Ellen MURRAY in “The Margaree’s”. James and Ellen had 4 children.

1829 Mary TOMPKINS (1809- ), daughter of Michael TOMPKINS and Mary DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland. On Jan 09 1837, she married James BROWN (1794-1889) arrived from Silversprings, Wexford County, Ireland in “The Margaree’s”. No children. James was previously married to Anastasie LeBLANC.

1829 Michael TOMPKINS (1813-1898), son of Michael TOMPKINS and Mary DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . In Apr 04 1837, he married Bridget FITZGERALD (1813-1869), in “The Margaree’s”. Bridget was daughter of Maurice FITZGERALD and Jane HEFFERNAN. Michael and Bridget had 10 children. On July 17 1853, Michael TOMPKINS, received a land grant at Big Brook.

1830 Harry McDANIEL (1799- ), son of Moses McDANIEL and Poll DOYLE, and wife Ann CAMERON (1801- ) settled at Lake O’Law. Harry and Ann had 7 children.

1831 Walter FORTUNE, son of Thomas FORTUNE and Bridget DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . In 1831, he married Elizabeth MORAN in “The Margaree’s”. Walter and Elizabeth had 11 children. On Apr 17 1848, Walter FORTUNE, Yeoman received a land grant at Harvard Lakes.

1831 Sarah FORTUNE (1798-1881), daughter of Thomas FORTUNE and Bridget DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland. She married James (KIELEY) KILEY(1785- 1876). Sarah and James had 6 children.

1831 Mary FORTUNE (1801-1884), daughter of Thomas FORTUNE and Bridget DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland . She married Pierre PUNCHON.

1831. James FORTUNE, son of Thomas FORTUNE and Bridget DOYLE, arrived from Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland. On Jan 09 1838, he married Johannah RYAN, daughter of Patrick RYAN and Johannah HYLAND in “The Margaree’s”. James and Johannah had 12 children.

1831 Dennis McGARRY (1809-1875), arrived from Dublin, Ireland. In 1836, he married Mary DOYLE (1808-1896), daughter of James DOYLE and Ann DOYLE in “The Margaree’s”. Dennis and Mary had 10 children.

Jun 20 1834 Donald MOWATT, Yeoman, received land grant on south of the N. E. branch of the Margaree River, in Emerald.

1840. James COADY (1795-1831) came from County Tipperary, Ireland via Mirimachi, NB. James married Margaret BUTLER (1804-) in NB. James and Margaret had 16 children, 4 who were born in “The Margaree’s”.

1840 James MILLER (1795-) came from Nova Scotia. James married Margaret MacDONALD. James and Margaret had 4 children. James married a second time to Jane MARPLE, daughter of Richard MARPLE and Jane MacPHERSON. James and Jane had 8 children.
