Pre-K Newsletter

January 2020

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! We had a wonderful time this past month with a lot of fun winter activities. A great, big “THANK YOU” to everyone who brought the teacher’s cards, gifts & treats, you made us feel very special!

Letter of the Week

In January we start our “Letter of the Week” program. Every week we will do projects that center around one or two letters of the alphabet. We will talk about the letter’s sound, trace it as well as discuss words that begin with that letter. In order to incorporate certain letters to fit certain holidays we do not follow the alphabet in order. For instance we do the letter “V” during the week of Valentines, the letter “E” during Easter week, the letter “M” during the week of Mother’s day, etc. Remember newsletters & lesson plans can be accessed online on our website.

Names & Zoo Phonics

We will also continue working on name tracing and name writing as well as Zoo Phonics. We use the “Handwriting Without Tears” alphabet that the Rohnert Park School’s use. You will find a copy of this in your child’s file. When working with the children on writing their names we try and encourage them to use the upper case letter for the first letter in their name and lower case letters for the rest. Every day we spend time working on Zoo Phonics and Concepts that will prepare them for Kindergarten. In the mornings we always do a pre-math and language arts activity in the readiness room as well. Other skills Kindergarten teachers look for are self help and social skills such as zipping and buttoning their own pants and coat, sitting quietly at circle time, raising a hand instead of shouting out, taking turns, sharing, using their words when angry, opening their own lunch items and of course self help in the bathroom. These are all things that can be encouraged at home as well.

Themes For January

Dec. 30th – Jan 3rd The Letter “A”

Jan. 6th – 10th The Letter “B”

Jan. 13th – 17th The Letter “C”

Jan. 20th – 24th The Letter “D”

Jan. 27th – 31st The Letter “F”

Nap Room

Ask your child if they were quiet in the nap room and remind them how

important this is so other children can sleep! This is not a time for playing

on their cot, making noises or being disruptive. If their behavior is keeping

other children awake they will be taken into the office. It is always helpful

to us if your children hear this from you too! Whenever they do a good job

they can put a sticker on the nap chart, after 5 times of doing a good job they

can pick a prize out of the prize box. The teacher will put their name on the

prize so you will know when this happens. When the prize appears be sure

and give them a big hug or high five and tell them how proud you are of their

nap room manners. One child is picked each day to receive the “Happy Hopper”.

This means they did the best job in the nap room and they will get a certificate,

a prize, a special snack for 3:00 snack time, get to hold the book on tape, and

get to be first on the swings outside. If they tell you they got Happy Hopper it’s

a really big day for them so help them feel proud!

Please remember…

• Share days are Friday’s only (Thursday, if your child does not attend on Friday) Please bring one small toy only and label with your child’s name. Thank you for leaving ALL items home on other days. Make sure your child knows this is something to let other children play with. For that reason special toys children will want to hold on to or breakable items are better left at home.

• Label all items, car seats, lunchbox on the OUTSIDE…(we have several that look alike), coats (again we have several that look alike), share toy etc.

• Take coats home nightly. Every child has ONE hook only so there is no place for extra coats to hang. Additional coats will be put into the lost and found basket on Friday evenings and donated to the Good Will on the last day of every month.

• Check the Art File daily for art masterpieces & information from the office. Children are very proud of the art work they spent time creating and are excited to show it to you.

We will be closed on the following:

Tuesday, Dec. 31st we will close at 5:00 for New Year’s Eve

Wednesday January 1st for New Year’s and January 20th for Teacher Work Day

Happy New Year! Katrina, Lisa, Mary, Cassie & Lacey
