Themed Walks and Events Calendar

Organising themed walks and events throughout the year is a great way to:

• obtain publicity

• attract new walkers

• celebrate achievements

• recognise volunteers

• give inspiration

• create a team

• involve partners, MSPs and local councillors

• have fun!

Here are some ideas to help you plan your walking events. Thanks to the walking for health projects who have contributed suggestions. Events can be held at any time of year or linked to existing events and campaign weeks.

|January |1st – New Year’s Day walk to get everyone first footing in a healthy way |

| |25th – Robert Burns walk – what about a walk full of tartan chic and perhaps finishing with a poem or two? |

|February |14th – St Valentine’s Day (and it’s also National Heart Month) so why not wear red or an “I love walking” t-shirt from our online shop |

|March |8th – International Women’s Day walk, take this opportunity to celebrate the great women in your project |

| |No Smoking Day walk, held annually on the 2nd Wednesday in March, is an opportunity to promote local smoking cessation services |

|April |Step Count Challenge – sign up for our 8-week workplace walking challenge |

| |Why not put a ‘Spring’ in your step with an Easter Bonnet Walk or an Easter Egg Hunt walk? |

|May |May is Living Streets’ National Walking Month, including Walk to School Week and Walk to Work week |

| |Mental Health Awareness Week starts on the second Monday in May every year – improve your mental wellbeing by getting active outside |

| |24th – National Brother’s Day – why not organize a gentlemen-only stroll and celebrate brotherhood? |

|June |1st-7th – Volunteers’ Week – take this opportunity to thank your Walk Leaders with our Volunteer Award certificates and gifts |

| |Dementia Awareness Week happens in early June each year – so why not raise awareness while you walk? |

| |Big Fit Walk organise a 30-minute led Big Fit Walk on any day in June to encourage more people to get walking in your local area using our free resources. |

| |Why not take part in The Moonwalk Scotland – and help beat breast cancer |

|July |July is ‘National Picnic Month’ – so why not pack a lunch to go and enjoy your sandwich surrounded by sunny Scottish scenery? |

| |30th July is the International Day of Friendship – why not organise a ‘bring a friend’ walk? |

|August |First Sunday in August? Then it’s National Sisters Day – why not have a ladies’ walk and celebrate sisterhood? |

|September |World Car Free Day takes place on September 22nd each year – why not mark it with a walk? |

|October |International Walk to School Month happens annually in October |

| |1st – International Day of Older Persons why not organise an ‘olden days’ themed walk in your area which looks at historical points of interest? |

| |You could also organise a walk or event to celebrate the older people in your community for Silver Sunday, an annual day of fun and free activities for older people in early|

| |31st – organise a Halloween walk, dress up in your finest fancy dress or hold a pumpkin hunt walk |

| |Walk-toberfest – you could do walks on themes such as gardens and fruit trees, wildlife or historic buildings |

|November |14th – World Diabetes Day – organise a sponsored walk for Diabetes UK and raise awareness while you walk |

| |30th – St Andrew’s Day walk – why not celebrate our National Saint by donning some tartan! |

|December |Why not get festive and work up an appetite before your Christmas lunch or carol singing by organising a walk in your favourite festive gear – be that reindeer antlers, |

| |Santa hats, Christmas jumpers, or even just a tinsel scarf! |

• Write and send a press release to your local newspaper, radio and TV news editors

• Take photographs and share them on Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
