Foreign influence in Hawaii was positive (military and political advisors, democracy, protection, medical help like father Damien.) or negative, (plantation system, disease, land). Immigration has also been a great part of Hawaii and U.S. history. Many immigrants came to Hawaii and the U.S. to pursue freedom and a better life. From the early colonists in America to the Sugar Plantation workers in Hawaii, people found long work hours, little money and poor living conditions. Some people found fortune, while most found a hard life and hard work. Like all immigrants, your families came to America or Hawaii for a purpose. Immigrants all brought with them history and a part of their culture.

Objective: To look at an ethnic group you are related to, find out the history of your family, and to understand an item of culture (dance, martial art, food, musical instrument) that was brought to America or Hawaii by that ethnic group.

Materials: Powerpoint or Pages, item of choice from an ethnic group.

Procedure:

1. IN CLASS. Create a circle map. Brainstorm your ethnicities. Second circle come up with items of culture. Box: How will you find information about the topic?

2. Sign up for item you want to present. One item per class. It can be a food item, dance, martial art.

3. Powerpoint: Questions to answer:

a. When did your ancestors come to America or Hawaii? Give a history of your family. Time to do a short brag about your fam.

b. Why did they come to Hawaii or the U.S?

c. Where did your work? Plantation, factory, military, railroads, etc…

d. What cultural item did they bring that you would like to present or perform?

e. Procedure: What is the procedure to make it or how do you perform it?

f. Why do they making it or why do they perform it?

g. Why do you like about the item?

h. Where can you find the item in Hawaii or the U.S. (it would probably be better to show that it can be found in Hawaii. Do research on this.)

Should be at about 8 slides. Also you may make a mixture of live performance and powerpoint presentation. Presentation should be 5-7 minutes

Remember how Mr. Honjiyo did his presentation. Don’t do it that long but follow the procedure. Some of you might be first generation or second generation to Hawaii or the US. You can still answer the questions because your family is a part of the current generation of immigrants.
