Japanese Food TY Module Brid Murphy
Overview of resource:
This topic should enable students to recognise and use some very key vocabulary/ language chunks to talk about food they like and dislike. Studets will learn to ask and answer questions about their food preferences.
Then they will develop their knowledge of Japanese cuisine and practise their chopstick skills.
Task Description:
Task 1
The aim of this task is for students to use key vocabulary to state their like or dislike of certain foods.
1) The teacher should begin the task by displaying a picture of some Western popular food. The teacher will then elicit vocabulary/ language chunks from the students as they describe their like/ dislike of the food shown. The teacher will put illustrations with these key phrases on the board
2) The students will interview their partners using a pairwork worksheet and key vocabulary. The students will record their partners answers by checking the appropriate box.
3) The students will then report back on what they found out about their partners food likes/ dislikes.
Task 2
The aim of this task is to elicit from the students how much they already know about Japanese cuisine and also to develop students' knowledge about it. In general students know about 2 or 3 Japanese dishes. The aim is to broaden their knowledge.
1) After a general discussion of the topic, students will watch two short video clips. Firstly about Japanese Food in everyday home life and secondly at a Japanese restaurant.
2) After watching the clips the students do a matching task to name and identify 8 Japanese
popular dishes.
Task 3
The students practise their chopstick skills.
Each student is given a small bowl, a set of chopsticks and a plastic piece of sushi.
The teacher demonstrates how to use chopsticks efficently. Fun activities such a chopstick races can be done to improve and challenge the students chopstick usage.
Learning Outcomes:
Talk about foods they like and dislike in the target language.
Recognise keywords and language chunks when talking about food preferences.
Recognise a braoder range of popular Japanese dishes.
Improve chopstick skills.
Resources:
Pictures of food.
Pairwork worksheet.
Video clip from NHK Encyclopedia of Japanese culture. (available from the Japanese Embassy)
Expected time taken: : A double TY class, 80 minutes.
Key Language: - ga daisuki desu./ - ga suki desu/ ga amari suki ja nai desu/ ga kirai desu.
Question: ____ ga suki desu ka?
Names of Japanese dishes: Tempura, Ramen, Sukiyaki, Sashimi, Miso shiru etc
Suggested Scaffolding Activities:
Writing/ saying your food preferneces from most liked to most disliked.
Students put in order sentences to create a dialogue about food preferences.
Practicing pronumciation – repeating after the teacher.
Students research other Japanese dishes and recipes.

Teacher's Notes: As this is an introduction to the topic of Japanese food, it is not necessary to cover a large range of vocabulary to cover the task.
If the students would like to further explore the topis of Japanese food, they could research it online and perhaps do a TY project on this topic.
They could look up the Food Menus of Japanese Restaurants in the area and plan a TY field trip to a Japanese Restaurant.
