A great depression hit Europe in the 1920s, by the 1930s, the United States was well on its way to feeling the effects of this. Countries were at a loss. WWI had not only devastated their land, but their economies as well. During this interwar (between war) period, countries had to look out for themselves. Because of this, they often showed very little concern for what was going on in the world.Like in Germany, yes, Germany. The country that fell victim to harsh punishments laid out by the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. See, France, Britain, Soviet Union—none of these countries felt very lovey-dovey towards Germany, because of WWI. Now, things were different. They couldn’t worry about Germany; they had their own problems to face. So it went, for several years, allowing Hitler to gain power. See, Hitler was in prison for some time following World War I (for trying to take over part of the government – treason). During this time, he wrote his book, Mein Kampf (my struggle), writing about his own life & experiences, as well as his political ideas. Hitler believed Germany could & should be great again; they should be allowed a military to defend themselves; they should gain back land wrongly taken from them! As people read, they began to take pride in their country again, and they listened to what he had to say. Here was a leader, during the lowest point in the country’s history, saying they could rise again! When Hitler helped form the NAZI (national socialist) party, people joined. By 1933, he became Chancellor of Germany. Immediately, he began to rebuild & rearm Germany. Sure, he wasn’t allowed, but who was to stop him? Other countries had their own problems so they ignored it. The League of Nations did nothing—maybe they could have, if they had a military or a powerful country like United States joined. So Hitler rebuilt his military, as the world turned a blind eye. Now, Hitler wanted land back. He took over Austria, and soon aimed for Czechoslovakia. Sure, he wasn’t allowed, but nobody was there to stop him. As he set his sight on Czechoslovakia, Britain & France knew something must be done. However, they did not want war. So, British Prime Minister (Neville Chamberlain) made an agreement with Hitler in Munich, Germany—giving Hitler the western half of Czechoslovakia, but NO MORE! This agreement—Munich Agreement, used a policy of APPEASEMENT (satisfy someone, so they won’t ask for anything else), with the idea if Hitler is given this land, he will no longer want more. Because no one from Czechoslovakia had any say in the agreement they called it the Munich Betrayal, but Chamberlain went back to Great Britain claiming he just saved the world from a future world war!Do you trust Hitler? Of course not. Within months, he broke the agreement, annexed (took over)the rest of Czechoslovakia (eastern half). Still, most countries wanted to avoid war and did not respond. Finally, when Hitler invaded Poland, September 1st 1939, France & Britain declared war on Germany. This marked the beginning of WWII (September, 1939 Hitler invades Poland). Get this: Hitler invaded Poland because two Polish soldiers shot & killed two German men at a German radio station in Poland. Dirty, right? Wrong. See, Hitler needed an excuse to invade. So the whole attack was staged. The two German dudes that died were actually already dead. It was a fake attack; but enough to give Germany reason to attack Poland. I know right….CRAZZZYYYY!!!!What about the Soviet Union, you ask? Of course, their leader, Joseph Stalin, hated Hitler. The only country separating the Soviets from the Germans was Poland; when Hitler invaded Poland, it would bring him closer to the Soviet Union. The last thing Stalin wanted was an attack from Germany on his country. So despite his hatred toward Hitler, Stalin shocked the world when he & Hitler signed the NON-AGGRESSION PACT—agreeing to invade the eastern half of Poland, while Hitler invaded the Western half. They’d split Poland down the middle promising not to attack each other (Non-Aggression). They hated each other, but now were no longer a threat to each other, or so Stalin thought! For almost three years, Hitler kept his promise not to attack Stalin. Without having to worry about the Soviets, Hitler could concentrate his military elsewhere. His method of attack, called the BLITZKRIEG (lightning war), involved lightning-quick attacks and the battles were very often deadly & effective. Following Czechoslovakia and Poland, within a year Hitler’s military went on to invade & conquer Denmark (in just a matter of hours!), Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, & also France capturing Paris in 1940. This left Great Britain as the only Allied Power left to fight against the German army.
