From the Chair

This is an exciting time for the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In one short year, our rising third-year dermatology residents, Kathleen Casamiquela and Kenneth Saul, will be the first graduates of a Mississippi dermatology residency program. With nine regular faculty, eight affiliate faculty and seven residents, we are now a midsized department with a bright future. Perhaps most importantly, we served 24,390 patients during the last 12 months with compassionate, high-quality care. Of course, it is critical that we always strive to do better.

Please do not hesitate to call day or night with any suggestions. My cell number is (330) 883-5302.

Bob Brodell, M.D.

Professor and Chair UMMC Department of Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is making good progress toward a goal of developing a world-class Department. Our mission is clear:

1. to enhance the patient-centered care provided by dermatologists in Mississippi 2. to focus on subspecialty care needs of patients and to support our dermatology colleagues throughout the state 3. to provide high quality educational programming for medical students and residents 4. to provide timely and focused continuing medical education (CME) for dermatologists and other physicians in the State

of Mississippi and throughout the region 5. to develop basic science, translational and clinical research programs that extend the knowledge base of dermatology

dermatology resident continuity clinic, teach at Grand Rounds, resident and student conferences, and help us further the research mission of the University.

Welcome

Jasmine Hollinger, M.D. A native of Jackson, Dr. Hollinger attended Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in African and African-American studies with a minor in biology. She attended medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and was elected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Following an internship in internal medicine at UMMC, she began her dermatology residency at Howard University in Washington, D.C., which will be completed in June of this year. Her interests include general dermatology, teledermatology, disorders of pigmentation, and issues related to skin of color. She is looking forward to returning home, noting that she is committed to enhancing medical education for medical students and residents as well as serving the people of Mississippi. Jasmine is married to Lowell Hollinger, a music instructor and band director at Jackson State University. She enjoys cooking, visiting zoos and aquariums, and spending time with family, including her miniature schnauzer, Kingsley.

Faculty Forward Survey

While Mississippi may not always rank at the top of every list, our medical center does rank highly in many educational endeavors. In the 2014 Faculty Forward Engagement Study, job satisfaction was ranked higher at UMMC than most other dermatology programs regionally and nationally.

The survey, which assesses levels of U.S. medical school faculty engagement, looked at items such as medical school governance, collegiality and collaboration, as well as compensation and benefits.

Of the 16 dimensions examined, UMMC dermatology department faculty overall felt more satisfied with their jobs than most of their peers and cohorts. In the areas of "relationship with the supervisor", "my job", "focus on the medical school mission", "compensation and benefits", and "faculty recruitment and retention", the response score for each was above 85 percent. In fact, none of the response scores slipped below 60 percent in any area for the department.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM NOTES

Welcome 2015 Dermatology Residents!

We are pleased to introduce three new residents who will be joining us July 1, 2015. They are Allison Roberts Cruse, M.D., Maureen Offiah, M.D., and Anna Allred Wile, M.D.

Allison Roberts Cruse, M.D. Allison grew up in Madison, Mississippi. She attended the University of Mississippi and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biology. She spent two years performing research in the Division of Neuroradiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before earning her M.D. at the UMMC School of Medicine. Maureen Offiah, M.D. Maureen was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. She attended the University of Ibadan, Nigeria's Premier University, where she graduated with honors with a degree in physiotherapy (physical therapy). Due to her interest in leadership and management, she obtained an M.B.A. from Enugu State University. She practiced as a physiotherapist for some years before relocating to the U.S., where her new husband was working at the time. She decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a physician, and took prerequisites at Holmes Community College and Tougaloo College. Maureen earned her M.D. at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She is

currently completing her medicine internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Having made her home in Clinton, Maureen enjoys spending time with her amazing husband, Jude, and their wonderful daughters and son: Kamsiyonna, Somto and Chukwudike. Laser Addition

We are excited to announce the addition of a fractionated CO2 laser to our practice at the Face and Skin Center in Ridgeland. The Lutronic eCO2 laser is a versatile fractional ablative laser that allows us to provide exceptional treatment for rhytids, lentigines, dyschromia, textural irregularities and scars. The fractionated design provides less downtime and risk than with a standard CO2 laser. We have seen some great results in our patients. If you would like to refer a patient for a consultation, please contact the Face and Skin Center at 601-853-6333 or phone or text Kim Ward at 601-941-3378.
