Java, Internet Native Banner, Firefox 12, and SASAfter updating to Version 12 of Firefox (May 2012), I could no longer connect to Internet Native Banner with Firefox, could with IE. David in ITCS advised that I remove all versions of JAVA and then reinstall the latest version of JAVA. That was bad advice, since the latest version is 7, and Version 7 is not compatible with INB. With Version 7 one will not be able to access INB with Firefox or IE.Here is the message you get from INB when using Firefox and trying to connect with INB.When I removed Java 7 and installed the latest version of Java 6, all was well with INB, but then SAS started complaining. SAS is designed to use a particular version of Java, one that is not the latest version. For the release of SAS 9.3 I have, that is version Java Update 24 (6.0.240). To get SAS to stop complaining, I had to reinstall the desired version of Java from the SAS installation DVDs.Firefox now blacklists versions of JAVA it decides are risky. As I type, this now includes the release of JAVA 6 which was the latest just a week ago. The bottom line for me is that I can no longer use Firefox to access Internet Native Banner. I have now installed Java 7 so I can use Firefox elsewhere, and two releases of Java 6 for SAS and INB.In July of 2012, Java warned that it was removing the latest version of Java 6 while upgrading Java 7.It did not uninstall the version 6 java, but now I am nervous about it doing so in the future. To get the installation exe for release 6, go to the Windows x86 Offline version for 32 bit applications*. JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is all you need. The development kit versions include JRE, but you don’t need the development kit stuff.*Assuming you are using 32 bit SAS. If you are at ECU, that is likely, even on your 64 bit machine, since ECU provides only 32 bit Office, and 64 bit SAS will not interface with 64 bit Excel.Earlier editions of Java Standard Edition Version 6 can be downloaded from this archive site: You have to create an Oracle account first. It is noted, in the control panel, that it is 32 bit Java that is installed. Here is shows that 7.4, 6.32, and 6.24 are in place.Return to Wuensch’s SAS Help Page ................
