Test Basics

• Tests can be created directly in a content area using the Add Test tool but this is meant to be a one-time use approach

• Tests created from a Pool using Test Manager allow the instructor to use random blocks of questions, making each user’s test unique

• Pool Manager – a Test Pool is a repository of questions to be used in one or more tests

• Test Manager – allows you to pull questions from various Test Pools

• Test can be exported/imported as long as you use Test Pool and Test Manager

Note: when you export a Test Pool or Test Manager, you can only import it into its respective area (Pool into Pools, etc.). However, if you want to move a Test from the Test Manager to the Test Pool, you can create a Pool based on a test from Test Manager.

Instruction

1. Using Pool Manager

• A Pool is useful for setting up a question bank to pull questions from

• Example: You my have 30 questions for each chapter, but may only use 10 for each chapter on a test; set up a pool for each chapter and use Test Manager to create a random block of questions from the various pools

Add a Test Pool

Course Tools |Tests, Surveys and Pools | Pools | Build Pool | type Name | type Description (optional) | type Instructions (optional) | click Submit | on the Pool Canvas, choose the type of question from the drop-down box | click Go

2. Question Settings

• Question Settings is available for each test created

• There are several settings available for the test:

Feedback

Select this check box to include the option to enter feedback for individual answers rather then just one set of feedback for correct or incorrect answers.

Images, Files and External Links

Add images, files, and URLs to questions

Select this check box to include the option to attach images, files, and URLs to questions in the Test.

Add images and files to answers

Select this check box to include the option to attach images and files to answers.

Question Metadata

Add categories, topics, levels of difficulty, keywords and instructor notes to questions. This is considered a more advanced feature. When searching for questions from a Question Pool or other Tests, Instructors may search for questions by category and keyword.

Scoring

You can allow the option to set standard points for all questions or use default points.

Display

Can specify random ordering of answers, horizontal or vertical display, and numbering options for answers.

Negative Marking

Allows Instructors to apply negative point values for incorrect answers on assessment questions. This is useful in penalizing students for guessing answers by giving negative points rather than zero. It must be enabled in Question Settings on the test or pool canvas. This feature wasn’t available in the previous version.

You can enable/disable any of these settings at any time.

3. Creating Questions

• Once you’ve set your Creation Settings, you are ready to add questions.

Multiple Choice

Hover over Create Question | choose Multiple Choice | type question in Question Text box | choose answer numbering (a, b, c) | answer orientation | choose options (allow partial credit and randomize answers) | choose number of answer options (typical 4 or 5; if you want fewer, click remove next to the answers below | type answers in each answer box | click the radial button next to the correct answer | you can choose to give correct and incorrect answer feedback | click Submit

Some types of questions:

Fill in the Blank

Fill-in-the-Blank and Fill-in-Multiple Blanks questions offer contains and pattern match as grading options for answers. Instructors do not have to rely only on exact match for grading and manually enter every possible correct answer. Instructors can also make the answers case sensitive.

Matching

Students will automatically get partial credit (including fractions of a point) based on how many parts they have correctly matched.

Multiple Answer

This question type requires that all answers the instructor marks as correct need to be checked by students in order for them to receive any points for the question.

Hot Spot

Students can click an area of a photo, which is defined by the instructor. Anything outside of the “hot spot” is marked incorrect.

4. Using Test Manager

• Once your Pool(s) have been set up, you create a test using the Test Manager

• The Test Manager will allow you to pull a specific number of questions and/or question types from each pool into one test

Build a Test from a Pool

Course Tools |Tests, Surveys and Pools | Tests | Build Test | type Name | type Description | type Instructions | click Submit | on the Test Canvas, hover over Reuse Questions | choose Find Questions | you’ll be asked to either copy or link to questions | click Continue | you can use any of the browsing criteria to choose your questions | click Pools | click the checkbox next to the pool you wish to use | the questions from that pool will be listed | check the questions you want to include in the pool | you have the option to change link or copy questions | click Submit | you can click on the score for each question to change the points and designate it as Extra Credit

Build a Test with Random Blocks

• Random Blocks enable instructors to randomly choose a portion of the questions in a pool so that each student who accesses the test gets a different set of questions.

Course Tools |Tests, Surveys and Pools | Tests | Build Test | type Name | type Description | type Instructions | click Submit | on the Test Canvas, hover over Reuse Questions | choose Create Random Block | click the checkbox next to the pool | choose question type you wish to use or All | click Submit | the block is added to the test | you can set the quantity of questions to use and points by clicking on the appropriate box and click

Build a Test with Question Sets

• Question Sets are similar to Random Blocks in that Instructors can choose to use a portion of the questions available in a pool. The primary difference is that Question Sets allow you to quickly add and remove questions from the set in use. Random Blocks require you to edit the entire block and change the settings of the initial import.

Course Tools |Tests, Surveys and Pools | Tests | Build Test | type Name | type Description | type Instructions | click Submit | on the Test Canvas, hover over Reuse Questions | choose Create Question Set | click the checkbox next to the pool | choose question type you wish to use or All | click Submit | the block is added to the test | you can set the quantity of questions to use and points by clicking on the appropriate box and click

5. Deploy a Test

• Once you have set up your test pool and created your test in the Test Manager, you need to deploy the test or make it available

Select a Content Area (i.e. – Exams or weekly module) | hover over Create Assessment | click Create Test | select the test you wish to use from the Add Test list | click Submit | set your options as described in Test Options below

6. Test Options

• Description: instructions and special settings are described here (i.e. – time limit, availability, quantity of questions, etc.)

• Open Test in new window: suggest no so students can’t reference any of the course links for information to aid them with their test

• Make the link available: this will make the test available to students

• Add a new announcement for this Test: this will automatically add an announcement that the test is available

• Multiple attempts: this allows students to take the test/quiz more than once; you can set an unlimited amount or limit the number of attempts

• Force Completion: forces the student to complete the test within the initial launch of the exam; caution – if they encounter Internet issues, you may need to reset the students’ attempt

• Set Timer: this option provides students with a time limit to complete the test. Please note that the student will be allowed to complete the test past the time allotment. There will a notation in the Grade Center that the student exceeded the time and how long he/she took. Special notes:

o The timer for the test is actually on Blackboard’s server so once the student begins taking the test, the timer is running. Even if the student “backs out” of the test using the Internet Browser back button, the timer is still running.

o Pop-up blockers and security settings on the student’s computer may disable JavaScript, and prevent the 1-minute warning from appearing. Students should always note their start time and monitor their time. There are directions on the Help Wiki on how to ensure JavaScript functionality has not been disabled.

• Display After/Until: this is a time restriction, allowing the instructor to limit students’ access to the test. You MUST use both Display After and Display Until

• Password: Select this option to require a password to take the test. No spaces are allowed in password. This is good if you are taking a test in class – you can require that students be present to take the test and receive the password when they show up.

• Self-Assessment Options: choose to include in Grade Center calculation, and you can set it as visible only the student for self-assessment (this one cannot be reversed).

• Test Feedback:

o Score: Select this option to present only the final score to students. This is the default.

o Submitted Answers: recaps answers submitted by the student

o Correct Answers: displays correct answers

o Feedback: displays any feedback set up with the test from the instructor

o It is best to choose only Score until the test has been completed by all students. If you let students see correct answers and/or feedback, they can share the answers with other students who haven’t taken the test yet. Instead, when the test is finished, you can modify the test settings to show all of the options so students can learn from their mistakes.

• Test Presentation:

o All at once: presents the entire assessment on the screen to the student

o One at a Time: Displays one question at a time; students are given a navigation tool to move between questions

o Prohibit Backtracking: this option is used in conjunction with One at a Time and prohibits students from changing their previous answer

o Randomize Questions: questions displayed in a random order each time the assessment is taken

7. Sample Quiz for Students

• You should give a sample quiz to your students to use prior to each test using the same settings as your course tests

• This helps confirm that the computer and browser being used by the student will not result in errors, making the tests successful

8. Automated Regrading

• Instructors can now fix problematic questions by simply editing the invalid question directly and having all necessary updates flow automatically to the Grade Center.

• After the question has been updated, Blackboard Learn recalculates the score of all submitted assessments that included the updated question(s).

• When editing a test with attempts, you will see a notice at the top of the page and prompted to Save and Update Attempts.

9. Viewing a Completed Test

Grade Center | click Needs Grading if manual grading component | if auto-graded, click Full Grade Center and hover over a cell | click the drop-down menu icon and choose View Grade Details | in the Attempts Table, choose Open Attempt | the test questions and student’s answers will displayed on the page | the points received for each question are editable so partial credit can be given | click Submit when finished grading

10. Grading a Test

• Most test questions (multiple choice, matching, hot spot, etc.) are automatically graded

• Some questions require manual grading, and will display an exclamation point next to the question

• The following questions are examples of manually graded items:

o Short answer

o Long answer

o Essay

• To grade these items, simply read the student’s reply and enter the grade in the field provided

• If you enabled the incorrect and correct answer feedback, the student will be prompted with advice for getting it correct

11. Exporting Tests

• You can export a test from another course shell and import it into another shell

• You can export both Tests and Pool Manager items

• As noted earlier today, you can only import Test Manager items into the Test Manager, and Test Pool items into the Test Pool

To Export:

Course Tools | Tests or Pools | click the contextual menu next to the item and choose Export | Save the .zip file to your computer

To Import:

Course Tools | Test Manager or Test Pool | click Import Test or Import Pool on the action bar | click Browse for local file | choose the .zip file and click Open | click Submit | click Ok | the test will be added to your Tests or Pools area

12. Enable Detailed Results After Grading

• Once all the tests are submitted and graded, you can turn on the detailed results of the test, including incorrect answer feedback

• Make Test Available & Show Details

Control Panel | Content Area containing test | click contextual menu to the right of test name | click Edit Test Options | choose Yes for Make the Link Available | deselect Display After and Display Until (if used) | scroll down to section 4 (Test Feedback) | check Score, Submitted Answers, Correct Answers and Feedback | click Submit

13. How Students View Completed/Graded Test

• Once you have made the test and detailed results available, students can access their test through their Grades

• This becomes a great study guide for midterm and/or final exams

My Grades | click on the grade in the Grade Column | click on the grade in the Calculated Grade Column | the test will be displayed showing the date and time submitted, score, time used on test (if timed) | if enabled by the instructor, students will see their submitted answers, the correct answer, and any feedback built into the test

14. Item Analysis

• Provides statistics on overall test performance and individual test questions to help you recognize questions that might be poor discriminators of student performance.

• You can use this information to improve questions for future test administrations or to adjust credit on current attempts.

• You can run item analyses on deployed tests, but not on surveys.
