Submitted by Vivian Mulligan, Vivian.mulligan@.017589500LIBRARY NOTES: January can often be a time when people are looking for new motivations and directions in their lives, and our own OUUF library can be a great source for fresh awakenings. The library has a large collection of inspirational books for members and friends to explore. Examples include The Peace Book, by Louise Diamond; Care of the Soul, by Thomas Moore; Rules for Aging: a Wry and Witty Guide to Life, by Roger Rosenblatt, and that old standby—Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. All books check out on the honor system. Just put them in the return basket on the library shelf when you are finished with them. This year the book is The Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life by Karen Armstrong. As a scholar of world religions, Armstrong extends an invitation to explore the particular place of compassion in religious and ethical teachings. The OUUF group will be led by Bob Nuffer and will meet in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays from 2-3:30pm beginning on January 06, 2019 and running for 13 weeks. The book is available at Port Book and News with part of the purchase going to The Boys and Girls Club. -6413517272000405320551054000MANNA: On February 10, OUUF invites cooks to make their favorite chocolate treats and donate them for sale during the social time after service. We have many tasks that folks can do, some at the fellowship and some at home. OUUF is responsible for providing gently used/new clothing for about 300 people. Many community sources are used to collect the items needed.Ten years ago, the first Clallam County Homeless Connect was done. It is an event, held in March for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, who are able to come to one place (the Vern Burton Center in PA) to access services – Housing and job information, legal advice, connect with various social service agencies (about 50 entities), receive medical care, some dental care, haircuts, help with driver’s license reinstatement, sign up for state services and veteran’s services, free breakfast and lunch, free clothing and more. Over 300 local community members participate. This event is coordinated by Clallam County Homeless Outreach, a non-profit organization. This is the 4th year that OUUF is doing the clothing section. Items needed are casual, gently used or new: Men and Women – sizes small to XXL – Jeans, Khakis, Sweatpants; Sweatshirts, T-shirts, Fleece Tops; Coats; Socks/Underwear. Also Hats/Baseball Caps; Gloves/Mittens; Scarves; Tennis Shoes/Boots; Backpacks; Sleeping Bags; Waterproof items are particularly helpful. These are the items most wanted in previous years.Homeless Connect Helpers Needed To:1) Sort clothes on specified dates – first sessions are Thursday, Jan. 17th and Friday, Jan. 18th from 9am to 3pm. Thanks so much, Florence Bucierkaflorenceb@ or 360-683-4315Jefferson County Immigrants’ Rights Advocates. Katie Franco will be speaking to OUUF after our speaker on Sunday Jan. 13. Katie is an active member of Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (QUUF) in Port Townsend and also on the Board of JCIRA, the Jefferson County Immigrants’ Rights Advocates, a Washington non-profit corporation based in Port Townsend. ?From Katie: Despite our name's focus on Jefferson County, we also work to support local immigrants in Clallam County. In July 2018, JCIRA became aware of a longtime Sequim resident immigrant who had been placed in the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma on February 8, 2018. ?Since then, we have been visiting him there and helping his family in Sequim. He has now been in the Detention Center for 11 months and his next bond hearing will take place early in February 2019. The congregations of both QUUF and the First Presbyterian Church in Port Townsend have been actively involved in supporting his case by collaborating closely with JCIRA. We feel that the local community in Port Angeles and Sequim need to learn more about his plight so that they can also support and assist his case. In this workshop, we will build strategies for how to engage when we see racism around us, how to unpack our own biases, and how to take action in our community. This series is free, but space is limited. The workshops are progressive, with each one building on the last. By registering, we ask that you commit to the full series. If there is a last-minute scheduling conflict, please contact the facilitators about making up the content prior to the next workshop. is Homeless Connect clothes gathering and sorting time at OUUF.
