LEWIS AND CLARK MIDDLE SCHOOL STAFF HANDBOOK

SCOPE

This handbook provides policies and procedures for the Lewis and Clark Middle School Staff. The information in this handbook is a guide for day-to-day staff operations. The handbook is subject to the Jefferson City Public Schools District policies and procedures. It covers many of the situations the staff encounters, but not all of them.

CONTRACTED TIME

All teaching staff and classroom paraprofessionals and facilitators are expected to be in the classroom by 7:30 a.m. each morning unless assigned duties elsewhere. LCMS staff will adhere to JCPS Board of Education Policy, FILE GCJ that states, "A teacher shall not leave the school premises during school hours unless proper arrangements have been made and consent of the principal has been obtained."

Individual Plan Time: Individual plan time is scheduled for the purpose of class preparation, planning, grading papers, and is an integral part of the contracted day. Board of Education policy states that consent of the principal must be obtained to leave the building.

TEAM PLAN TIME/CONTENT MEETINGS

? Teams will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. ? Teams meet daily for one period with all members present, on time and prepared. ? Each team will select a leader and establish norms for conducting team business. ? Team time is to be used only for "team business." ? Teams will maintain a weekly and/or monthly calendar for projects tests and

assignments. ? Meetings are to be agenda driven by the team leader. Minutes are to be recorded

daily and kept in the team notebook. ? A portion of team time is to be used to analyze data, identify problem areas and

develop action plans. ? No more than 20% of team time will be spent on student management issues. ? Teams will meet with counselors and administrators as scheduled. ? Teams will regroup students of Academic Lab according to specific assessment

data. Student groupings should be sustained for at least one week and no longer than two weeks. Reassessment will determine new groupings at that time.

Content meetings within each grade level will meet on Tuesday and Thursday each week for the purpose of sharing student data from formative assessments. Other activities may include curriculum mapping, the development of formative assessments and sharing instructional strategies.

4

Department Chairs will schedule monthly department meetings. Dates and times TBA. These meetings will include sharing results and examples of data driven reteaching/enrichment from each grade level content area.

Faculty meetings will be held the last Wednesday of each month at 3:05 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). All faculty members are expected to attend staff meetings (see Board of Education Policy, paragraph GCKB).

School reform meetings will meet with the principal monthly with representatives from each grade level, Encore and Special Ed.

TEACHER WEBSITE

Teachers will develop and maintain an up-to-date website with homework, activities, links, about me, and any other information that may need to be communicated to students and parents.

COMMUNICATION PLAN WITH PARENTS

Teams will communicate with parents and students through weekly updates in Infinite Campus, email parents prior to big assessments and events, and send parents notification for missing assignments through Infinite Campus. Teachers will also communicate with parents when students have consecutive absences.

SUPERVISION

Supervision during passing times is imperative. Supervising from the classroom doorways allows supervision in the classroom as well as in the hallway. Under no circumstances should students be left in a classroom unsupervised. In case of emergency, telephone the main office for assistance.

DRESS CODE

Professional Dress is an important part of the image we project and a key factor in earning the community's respect. Professional dress makes a statement about who we are and our standards. Staff members are expected to dress in a neat and clean manner that projects a professional image. Jeans can be worn with appropriate Jefferson City school spirit shirt on Fridays only. Shorts are not allowed with the exception of Physical Education Teachers. Flip-flop foot ware is not allowed; if you would wear them in the shower do not wear to school.

PARENT CONTACT

Communication with parents is important. Contact with parents or guardians can be made by telephone, email, and approved Internet based messaging. Record contact made and maintain these records in a file. Save email contacts in a folder. A contact form is provided in this handbook.

5

PARENT CONFERENCES

Conferences are scheduled on two evenings each semester from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Every attempt should be made to schedule a conference for each student. Conference request letters should be submitted to the principal's office prior to being sent home. Document all conferences including those done by telephone. Any parent conference accomplished two weeks before or after the scheduled conference dates count as a parent conference for this purpose and should be documented and reported.

Homework Hotline must be updated daily with assignments, activities and any special team information.

DISCIPLINE/REFERRALS

An office referral form will be completed for students sent to an administrator. Document facts only (no opinions) on the referral form. Provide as much detail as possible. Do no list other student names or information on the referral. Note any previous intervention strategies such as safe seat, buddy room, team focus, detention, and parent contact made. If a student needs to be removed from the classroom immediately, send for an administrator to remove the student from the class. Telephone the office for assistance in the event of a serious situation. Infractions not requiring immediate attention should be placed in the appropriate administrator's mailbox. A record copy of the referral will be returned to the staff member making the referral and will also be sent to the parent.

GRADES

Parents may access your grade book for their student only using a password. Midterm and term grades will be mailed home. A schedule of dates for opening the window to post will be made available. All teachers will use the district wide grading scale.

GRADING SCALE A 93-100% A. 90-92% B+ 87-89% B 83-86% B- 80-82% C+ 77-79% C 73-76% C- 70-72% D+ 67-69% D 63-66% D- 60-62% F 59% or below

Grades must reflect mastery of content.

6

PARKING

Parking is available in front of and on side of the building. Please respect the Handicap and Visitor spaces. Staff will need to use the north Lewis and Clark Dr. entrance and exit between 7:158:30am and 2:30-3:30pm. Anyone using the south Lewis and Clark Dr. entrance or exit during those times or driving in front of the school will be subject to tickets from the Jefferson City Police Department.

ATTENDANCE

It is IMPERATIVE that accurate attendance be recorded and entered at the beginning of each period. The school day begins at 8:00 a.m.

MAIL

All mail will be sent to the Board of Education office for postage and mailing. One should allow at least two extra days for these letters to arrive home.

ALARMS/LOCKED DOORS

Alarms are set in the Media Center, Office, 108, and room 152 at night and on weekends. If you need to get into one of these areas, you will need to contact the principal.

HALL PASSES

Passes are found in the Student Planners and must remain in the Planner to be used. All students must have a pass, signed by the teacher, when in the hallway outside of passing times. This is necessary for security and accountability purposes. Each teacher is responsible for having a restroom sign-out and sign-in form.

LESSON PLANS

Lesson plans are to be prepared for each class and recorded in a lesson plan book on Friday for the upcoming week. Plans will be shared during content meetings. The lesson plan book will be available in the classroom and subject to evaluation.

SUBSTITUTE FOLDER

Clear and complete lesson plans must be left in an accessible place. Seating charts, dismissal times, planning times, lunch instructions, emergency procedures, discipline referrals, and any other instructions are to be readily available for the substitute.

You may be asked to substitute during your individual planning time when substitutes are unavailable. Your cooperation is always appreciated. This request will be made in emergency situations only. You will be compensated at the hourly rate for substitutes.

7

LEAVE INFORMATION

Please refer to the JCPS Employee Handbook for types of leave.

A teacher having the need to be absent must notify the principal and is responsible to secure his or her own substitute through Kelly Services, prior to the day of the absence. If you have an emergency, or become ill overnight, which makes it necessary for you to be absent from school, please call the building principal before 6:30 a.m. at 636-8216. The principal will then call to request a substitute teacher for that assignment.

Please avoid scheduling non-emergency doctor and dental appointments on Mondays, Fridays, staff meetings, and professional development days.

SCHEDULE

Advisor/Advisee: The primary goal for Advisory is to develop relationships with the students who are assigned to your group. Student success is directly linked to a feeling of belonging and connection at school. Advisory affords the opportunity for each teacher to become acquainted with a few students in a non-academic environment.

Please document a brief account of how you use Advisory each day; i.e., activity used, topic of discussion, questions posed, etc. A weekly reflection will help the committee determine what has been successful.

Advisory is to be used for getting to know your students and is not a free time. Advisory may at times, also be used for such things as:

? Finishing Class Work ? Meeting with groups or social development ? Processing and communicating with students

Teachers who share rooms have been assigned specific locations. Please do not change locations as these appear on the student schedule. Please take attendance at the beginning of class and indicate any tardies.

PURCHASE ORDER PROCEDURES

When desiring to make a purchase, obtain a requisition form in the main office file cabinet. Please list all information as to: company, address, title or materials requested, plus the price of the items. The department chair must approve the requisition and submit it for principal's approval. The requisition will be sent to the board for further approval. Once the order is received at LCMS, the person who placed the order will be contacted to pick up the order. No payments will be made to individuals from activity accounts.
