On behalf of the faculty and staff of Corinth-Holders Elementary School, I want to extend a very warm welcome as we begin this new school year. We are looking forward to an exciting and engaging school year serving the most valued members of our community, our students.

Corinth-Holders Elementary School has a deep, rich history and a connection to our community that is unique in Johnston County. Our teachers and staff are committed to providing rich learning experiences for your child in the year ahead.

This is also an exciting time in Johnston County Public Schools as we begin the next phase of JoCo 2020. This forward-thinking initiative stresses preparing students for success in the 21st century through classroom methods that focus on relationships, relevance, and innovation. This is a transformative time for teaching and learning in JCPS and we are thrilled to be on this journey with our students and families.

At the beginning of the year, each student will receive the Parent Gazette, which is the official JCPS parent-student handbook. This document contains information on policies and procedures specific to our school. Please take the opportunity to read carefully the information in both the Gazette and this handbook and contact school personnel if questions arise.

We thank you for entrusting us with your children and it is our mission to empower students who are prepared, inspired, respectful, and together everyone achieves success. At CHES, we are PIRATES!

Please contact me at any time with questions or concerns you may have about our school and your child. What a great year this will be!

Dr. Chris Kennedy

Principal

Bus Transportation

▪ Bus routes are devised by Johnston County Public Schools transportation services. Students are asked to be at their stop 10 minutes ahead of their scheduled stop time.

▪ Parents with concerns about bus stops and bus routes should contact JCPS Transportation using the Bus Stop Concern Form found online. Stop and route adjustments cannot be made at the school level.

▪ Bus transportation is a privilege. Students who do not comply with the rules and regulations and who interfere with the safe operation of the bus may forfeit the right to receive transportation. Parents are required to provide transportation to and from school during any bus suspension.

▪ Bus routes and assignments are made to maximize efficiency and student safety. As such, we are unable to accommodate requests for students to ride a bus other than the one to which they are assigned.

Car Riders

We welcome those parents who choose to provide transportation for their students. For student safety and to make the carpool experience as easy as possible, we ask you follow these procedures:

▪ For student safety, all car riders must be dropped off and picked up in the carpool area using the entrance on NC Highway 231. Please do not attempt to drop off your student in the parking lot or bus lot as these areas are not safe for students.

▪ All students must exit and enter on the passenger side of the vehicle where teachers are on duty to assist students if needed.

▪ Car riders may not be dropped off at school before 8:25 am unless they are participating in the Early Morning Care Program.

▪ Parents bringing their child to school after 8:55 am must bring their child inside and sign them in at the front office.

▪ For student safety and to protect instructional time, no students are to be signed out from the front office after 3:30 pm. If you need to pick up your child because of a doctor’s appointment or other urgent reason, we ask that you do so prior to 3:30 pm.

▪ Afternoon pickup will begin at 3:50 pm. Please display your carpool tag to ensure your student is dismissed to you as quickly as possible.

▪ In order to ensure student safety, students must be released into the carpool line. Parents should not come into the building to pick up their children unless being signed out at the office.

▪ Please be prompt in picking up your student. All students should be off campus by 4:15 p.m. At that time, any remaining car riders will be brought to the office and parents will need to come in to get them.

▪ After 4:30 pm, students not picked-up will be sent to after-school care for a daily drop off fee.

Student attendance is governed by JCPS Board Policy 4110. A student must attend at least half of the day in order to be counted present. The half day point is defined as 12:25 p.m.

When a student returns to school after being absent for all or part of a day, he/she is to bring a note signed by the parent or doctor explaining the absence. Excessive absences may require official doctor’s notes.

Excused absences are defined by state law and may be only for these reasons:

▪ Illness of the student

▪ Medical or dental appointment (requires an official note)

▪ Death in the immediate family

▪ Court summons (requires official documentation)

▪ Quarantine by the health department (requires official documentation)

▪ Religious holidays

▪ Immediate demands of the home, which in the opinion of the principal merits absences (specific details must be shared with the principal)

Family Trips/Educational Opportunities

The principal may excuse days for family trips and/or educational opportunities. These trips should be approved prior to the student’s absence from school. You may obtain Family Trip Request Forms from the main office. It is strongly recommended that trips not be scheduled the week prior to or the week of state testing.

Leaving School Early

▪ No student may leave school grounds after reporting to school without written permission from a parent or guardian.

▪ The parent or guardian must come into the office and show a photo ID before signing the student out to leave campus.

▪ Students may leave only with persons designated on the emergency contact sheet.

▪ Students who leave school before 12:25 and do not return will be counted absent.

▪ For safety reasons, no student should leave school after 3:30 p.m., unless an extreme circumstance has been prior approved by the principal.

Tardy to School

The tardy bell rings at 8:55, and students are expected to be seated in the classroom at that time. Students arriving to school after the tardy bell rings should report to the office with a parent to sign in. All tardy students must sign-in in the office by 12:25 to be counted present for the day.

To ensure your needs are met promptly and appropriately, please include your student’s full name and grade and the date on all written or electronic correspondence with the school.

Weekly Folders

Folders are sent home for students in grades K-5. You can expect to receive this correspondence regarding student academic progress each Tuesday. Teachers will use weekly folders for communication and information. Please make sure you have reviewed and signed off on these folders each week.

Class Dojo

Most teachers at CHES utilize Class Dojo, a free app that allows communication between teachers and parents. Please download the app and use it as another method to send and receive information from your child’s teacher.

ConnectEd Phone Messages

Dr. Kennedy will send out a weekly phone message using the ConnectEd system. This system also allows for email and text messaging. Please contact the school to make sure your communication preferences using this system are correct.

Telephone Use

The telephones at Corinth-Holders Elementary School are for school business only. Permission to use the phones must be obtained from an office staff member or teacher.

▪ Phone usage should be limited to cases of sickness or emergency.

▪ Students and parents should make arrangements for after-school transportation prior to coming to school to avoid confusion for students, staff, bus drivers, and car rider attendants.

▪ Phone calls for all staff members will be routed to their voice mail during instructional time.

Conferences

▪ Parents are strongly encouraged to meet with teachers and administration. Call the school or send a note with your child to schedule a conference.

▪ Conferences with teachers must be held before school, after school, or during the teacher’s planning time.

E-mail

• All teachers have e-mail accounts provided by the school system. The e-mail address is the teacher’s first and last name followed by @johnston.k12.nc.us.

(Example: SallyJones@johnston.k12.nc.us).

• Please check with your child’s teacher to obtain the correct e-mail address.

Website

Please visit our school website at johnston.k12.nc.us/ches for up-to-date information about our school. Contact information and the school’s events calendar are also available on that site.

Correct Contact Information for Parents

Our school data manager keeps demographic information about each student in our student information system, PowerSchool.

▪ For the safety of your student, it is vitally important that the school has current addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contact information for all students, as well as a current and accurate list of who is allowed to pick up your child.

▪ Please notify the school immediately of any changes to this information. We must be able to contact parents at all times.

Please take note of the following as it relates to medications and health concerns:

▪ State law does not permit school personnel to provide students with any type of medication that is taken internally. This includes Tylenol, aspirin, etc.

▪ With the exceptions of auto-injectors (such as EpiPens®) and inhalers, children are not permitted to carry any type of medication with them at any time at school.

▪ If students must take medication at school, parents must bring the medicine to the office and sign a medical form or come to school and dispense the medicine themselves.

▪ All medicine must be prescribed by a doctor and the form must be signed by the doctor.

▪ County policy states that non-prescription medication must be brought in new, unopened containers, and parents must check it in at the office.

▪ Prescription medication must be in the pharmacist’s original container.

▪ Parents should inform the school of any medical problems or medications that their children may be taking.

▪ At the end of the year, parents need to pick up any medicine left at the school. Medications will be destroyed two weeks after school ends.

▪ CHES does have the services of a school nurse who is on-site one day per week and provides consultative services the rest of the time.

▪ Parents should contact the school nurse to develop an emergency action plan for students with chronic illnesses.

CHES welcomes involvement from our parents and from the greater school community! Here are some ways to get involved:

Parent/Teacher Organization

The school’s PTO meets four times per year. This organization is intended to promote and maintain the best school for our students. Parents are encouraged to join and be an active part of the PTO by attending meetings and supporting its projects.

Advisory Council

The CHES school advisory council is appointed by the Johnston County Board of Education. It is made up of parent and community members who have shown an interest in the school. The advisory council meets with the school administration throughout the year to learn about the operation of the school and provide input from the parent/community perspective. If you have an interest in serving on the advisory council, contact Dr. Kennedy

Volunteers

There is always a need for volunteers at CHES. Anyone wishing to be a school volunteer must complete the volunteer application online at and be approved by Johnston County Public Schools prior to volunteering at the school.

Visitors

Parents, guardians, grandparents, visitors, and volunteers are always welcome at Corinth-Holders Elementary School! For the safety of our students, we require that all visitors and volunteers:

▪ Report to the office upon arrival and sign in

▪ Provide identification to the receptionist

▪ Secure and wear an identification sticker at all times while in the building

Field trips are an exciting part of a student’s education. Field trips at CHES are governed by JCPS Board Policy 3510. The following policies and procedures shall be observed with respect to field trips:

▪ Field trips must be an appropriate extension of the instructional program or student organizations. They must provide significant educational value and should be the most effective means for accomplishing the instructional objectives.

▪ Written permission from the parent or legal guardian on an official permission form is required for all field trips and must include approval for medical treatment in the event of accident or injury.

▪ As a general rule, students will ride the school-provided transportation to and from the event. Students may ride home from a school fieldtrip with a parent/guardian or a parent/guardian-approved adult on the school maintained "student information/contact list" if the parent or guardian has given such permission in advance of the school trip on the official permission field trip forms used in all schools.

▪ Parents who chaperone field trips may not bring siblings in other grades.

▪ Eligibility for field trips will be determined by the principal.

▪ All school rules, policies, dress codes, and bus regulations are in effect unless otherwise specified in the information letter to parents.

▪ A Level 2 volunteer status is required if serving on a field trip as a school chaperone. See “Parents, Volunteers, & Visitors” in the previous section of the handbook for further information regarding this process.
