Course Description: This is a high intermediate to advanced course that will focus on the natural relationship between academic reading and word learning. Students will be introduced to strategies and skills that will increase their ability to comprehend academic reading material: previewing, scanning, finding main ideas, summarizing and making inferences. They will become active readers focusing on both language and the process of reading. The vocabulary in this course involves words used broadly in all academic domains and that are needed for those who intend to continue their college studies. Students will learn vocabulary skills such as using context clues to clarify meaning; noticing context, usage and word form; participating in interactive and communicative word learning activities at the word level and sentence level and understanding collocations.

The following skills will be practiced in this course:

• previewing readings

• scanning

• understanding the topic of texts and paragraphs

• understanding and identifying the main idea

• understanding and identifying supporting details

• reading critically—fact vs. opinion

• understanding vocabulary in context

• becoming familiar with the process of learning vocabulary

• repeated written and oral practice of vocabulary

• practicing form, meaning, multiple meanings, collocations, grammatical features, derivatives, register and associations of vocabulary items.

• learning to self-assess knowledge of vocabulary

• learning proper use of references (dictionary) and online resources

• identifying the structure of a reading

• recapping, retelling and reacting to readings

• summarizing

Course Requirements and Grading:

Your grade of P (pass) or N (not passing) will be determined by the following factors:

Attendance & Participation 10%

Homework 10%

Quizzes 30%

Tests 50%

Participation and Attendance

This course is very intensive and we will be moving very quickly through material. Therefore, it is essential that you attend all classes and keep up with your assignments. ONE absence is excused. After that, any absence may affect your grade. If you miss a class, contact me or one of your classmates to find out what you have missed. When you return to class after an absence, you are expected to have all work assigned for that day. Remember that participation in a language class is very crucial for your improvement.

Homework

You are expected to read the assigned readings at home and required to write journals in the “journal booklet” that I provide to you. You will be assigned vocabulary journals for each unit (you must use minimum five words in each journal that are the focus of the unit,) but other entries will be a reader-response to the unit readings. Organize all your papers (journals, quizzes, homework, vocabulary and other important handouts) related to this class in a binder. At the end of the course, you will turn in a portfolio with all your assignments. Use the following web address to find definitions of words and their pronunciations: ()

Quizzes

You will have regular vocabulary and reading comprehension quizzes. They will be announced and will be given before the break or before the end of the class.

Tests

You will have two tests. Tests are based on vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing.
