GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

DEATH AND BURIAL OF CHRIST

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Part Two

INTRODUCTION: The death of Christ was under the sovereign control of our Lord. He had the authority to call ten thousand legions of angels to stop His crucifixion. Jesus said “I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.” (John 10:17-18) His work of redemption was complete when He offered Himself as our substitute and cried out from the cross “It is finished.” (Matthew 27:50)

I. EVIDENCE OF HIS DEATH

A. UNIQUENESS OF CHRIST’S DEATH.

1. Christ dismissed His spirit. (Matt. 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46; John 19:30)

2. Wonder of those who witnessed His death. (Matt. 27:54; Luke 23:47-49)

3. Miracles during His crucifixion and death.

a. Darkness over the earth. (Matt. 27:45)

b. Splitting of the curtain in the temple. (Matt. 27:51)

c. Earthquake. (Matt. 27:54)

B. PIERCING OF CHRIST’S SIDE. (John 19:34, 37)

II. EYEWITNESSES TO HIS DEATH

A. WITNESS OF THE SOLDIERS. (John 19:33)

B. WITNESS OF THE CENTURION. (Mark 15:44-45)

C. WITNESS OF JOSEPH AND NICODEMUS. (John 19:38-40)

D. WITNESS OF THE WOMEN. (Matthew 27:61; Mark 15:47)

III. EXPECTANCY FROM HIS BURIAL

A. FEAR OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS. (Matt. 27:62-66)

B. FUTURE PREDICTION OF JESUS.

1. Resurrection of Jesus.

“Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.” Matthew 17:22-23

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. John 2:19

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40

2. Harvest of souls.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” John 12:24

LESSONS FOR LIFE:

1. The bad news is that we are all sinners and are condemned before God.

2. The good news is that Christ died in our place for our sins.

3. The death of Jesus was the darkest hour in the history of mankind. The burial of Jesus was the most despairing hour in the lives of His followers. The resurrection of Jesus is the greatest news for all time and eternity. Will you trust Him today!
