Prelude

Announcements

Light of Christ

L In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen

L Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen

L If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Let us observe a moment of silence for reflection and self-examination.)

L Most merciful God,

C we confess that we are held captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

L Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to us the entire forgiveness of all our sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, on the mountain You showed Your glory in the transfiguration of Your Son. Give us the vision to see beyond the turmoil of our world and to behold the king in all His glory; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Children’s Message

The Sermon

*Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven, and is seated

at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Prayer and Words of Institution

*The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Together we partake in the Sacrament of Holy Communion

2 Kings 2:1-12

1Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.” 4Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. 5The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.” 6Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” 10He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.” 11As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

Mark 9:2-9

2Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Beautiful Savior

1 Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I'd love thee, truly I'd serve thee, light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

2 Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,

robed in flow'rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, he makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

3 Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,

bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels in the sky.

4 Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration, now and forevermore be thine!

Christ, Be Our Light

1 Longing for light, we wait in the darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you.

Make us your own, your holy people, Light for the world to see.

Refrain

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness.

Christ be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.

2 Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair.

Your word alone has pow’r to save us. Make us your living voice.

Refrain

Many the gifts, many the people, Many the hearts that yearn to belong.

Let us be servants to one another, Signs of your kingdom come.

The Transfiguration of our Lord

February 14, 2021

“It is Good to be in the House of the Lord”

We welcome all this morning to gather as faithful disciples in Christ on the campus of Mount Zion. We have been praying how best to serve God and serve all who desire to hear the Word of the Lord. We offer three venues hoping that you are comfortable in hearing, sharing and being in God’s Word this morning.

You have the option of staying in your car, tuning your radio to 95.9 FM and enjoy the fellowship of others who remain in their car. For best reception, we suggest finding a spot on the east portion of the parking lot. There will be an offering collected during the special music.

We also have patio worship at our 10:30 service. There are tables and chairs set along with a large screen TV which will live stream the service which is taking place inside the sanctuary. The tables and chairs are set up with physical distancing in mind.

We also offer indoor worship. The chairs will be set in pods and we encourage you to move chairs to physically distance for optimal health concerns and a sense of comfort for those who desire to be indoors. We desire that all who are inside to wear a mask. If you do not have one, or forgot yours, one is available for you. The doors will remain open and we will keep a continuous flow of are circulating. There will be a collection box for your offering stationed in the back of the sanctuary. We ask that you place your offering in the box before or after the service.

The Communion offered will be the same for all locations. You will receive a prefilled Communion cup/host and together we will commune as One Body.

We want to thank all of you who have remained faithful and helpful to sharing the Good News through the ministries of Mount Zion during this time. We are committed to being flexible and adaptable during this Covid era and we really do want to hear from you. Nothing is written in stone and how best to serve God and those who are called to give thanks and praise to the Lord in a safe and pleasing way is our main concern. If you have any insights or concerns, please share them with us.

We offer two worship services which are at 8:00am and 10:30am. The 10:30am service be the service to Zoom live. We will also return to having an adult forum at 9:15 which will also be offered on Zoom.

Annual Congregational Meeting

As per our constitution, we are required to have an Annual Congregational Meeting. The synod has provided the instruction and opportunity to do this online. We are not having our meeting online. The Annual Congregational Meeting will be held in person, in the sanctuary, between services on February 14 at 9:15am. We gather to elect new council members, affirm our Synod Assembly delegates and approve a Mission Spending Plan for the year 2021.

Bible Study resumes this Thursday at 10:00. We are studying the book of Revelation. The can link to our Bible Study on Zoom from our homepage:

Ash Wednesday Service

We will have one Ash Wednesday service at noon on February 17. This service will be Zoomed Live and there are “Ash Wednesday” packets available for worship in the home.
