Sheldon Kirschner's review of the Luboml memorial book (Oct. 8) states that in the wake of the German invasion in September 1939, "Polish gangs went on a killing spree, murdering a dozen Jews." A Polish rescuer, who was serving in the only army fighting Hitler at that time, tells a different version.

Both the Germans and, upon their retreat, the Soviets created a militia composed of local Jews and Ukrainians charged with "keeping order" and capturing and disarming Polish soldiers. Between these two periods, a unit of Polish soldiers located nearby retaliated against some of these collaborators who had, by then, shifted allegiance to the Soviet invaders.

The story is detailed in the recently published book The Story of Two Shtetls (Part Two).
