Jackson-Madison County School Board Resolution to Jackson City Council
(May 19, 2017, Jackson, TN) ? This morning in a Special Called Board Meeting, the Jackson-Madison County School Board vote unanimously in the absence of one board member, to submit the following resolution to the Jackson City Council in response to their recent resolution to end funding of the City of Jackson's portion of the local option sales tax:
Whereas the Jackson-Madison County School Board is assigned the responsibility to oversee the education of children in Jackson and Madison County; And whereas funding is a crucial factor to providing high quality teachers and resources that are needed in the education of all of the children of Jackson and Madison County; And whereas the Jackson City Council voted to end funding of its portion of the local option sales tax that was designated to the Jackson-Madison County Schools, And whereas the City Council did not engage in any conversation with the Jackson-Madison County School Board regarding this issue prior to the vote taken by the City Council; And whereas the decision of the City Council to end funding of the City's portion of the local option sales tax will put at risk the education of the children of Jackson and Madison County; Be it resolved by a unanimous vote of the members present of the Jackson-Madison County School Board to request a rescission of the vote taken by the Jackson City Council on Thursday, May 18, 2017, and restore the City portion of the local option sales tax that was committed to the School System during the voter referendum in May 1989. This action was considered and taken by the Jackson-Madison County School Board in a special called
meeting on Friday, May 19, 2017.

JMCSS Board Chairman Bob Alvey stated that "The Board wanted to ensure that the Jackson City Council
knows they are concerned about the action taken yesterday to abruptly end the payment of the city portion of
the local option sales tax that has been paid to the school system since 1989. The Board wants to see this
action rescinded and dialogue occur between the City Council and the County Commission to resolve these
issues. We do not want the city budget crisis to impact our ability to care for the educational needs of our
students."
