The role will involve a wide variety of elements from helping with model/rig design and manufacturing techniques; mechanical support and maintenance of the experimental facilities; running the facilities for all manner of users including commercial customers.Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities% TimeOperate the facilities for academic and enterprise staff and commercial clients, ensuring compliance with technical and safety requirements to produce high quality test data. 25 %Provide advice and support to internal and external facility users, producing original ideas and solutions to client problems.20 %Utilise apparatus and software for facility users in order to support test objectives.10 %Advise line manager on future resource requirements, including equipment and apparatus.10 %To ensure equipment in the work environment is maintained in accordance with technical and health and safety procedures, diagnosing faults and repairing apparatus as necessary.10 %To ensure compliance with health and safety processes within work environment.10 %To advise on the pricing and purchasing of equipment and consumables and ensure adequate stocks of supplies, ensuring finances and work resources are monitored efficiently and appropriately.10 %Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.5 %Internal and external relationshipsThe post holder will work within a team that includes a Manager and Level 4 Specialist Technician. The post holder will liaise with other members of the School, both academic and technical, as required to coordinate facility schedules, maintenance plans etc.The post holder will have direct contact with academic staff, students and commercial customers in order to provide a successful service to the facility users.Special Requirements of the RoleSome flexibility may be required to enable reconfiguration of equipment between experiments as well as when testing with commercial clients.PERSON SPECIFICATIONCriteriaEssentialDesirableQualifications, knowledge and experienceSkill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training in Engineering.Practical engineering skills and experience with instrumentation.Experience of applying understanding of specialist technical equipment, processes and procedures.Able to demonstrate a good understanding of technical processes relating to work area.Ability to accurately analyse and interpret complex quantitative and qualitative data, presenting summary information in a clear and concise format. Ability to make effective use of standard office computer systems including word-processing and spreadsheets.Relevant degree (or equivalent qualification or experience).Experienced tradesperson with further educational qualificationsFinancial administration/budget monitoring experience.Demonstrate commitment to maintaining professional knowledge and awareness through continuing personal and professional development.Experience in traditional manufacturing techniques (milling, turning etc.) Experience of computer aided design (particularly Solidworks) Knowledge of aerodynamicsExperience of experimental set-upKnowledge of electrical/electronic systems3D printing and CADExpected Behaviours Able to apply and actively promote equality, diversity and inclusion principles to the responsibilities of the role.
