SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist provides support with written communication writing/editing for the Association’s newsletter and quarterly magazine, and marketing communication products. The position provides assistance with writing and editing related to government relations/public affairs initiatives for the Association. The position also engages in media outreach and provides support for official HACU social media vehicles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as a writer/editor for The Voice of Hispanic Higher Education magazine, HACU’s quarterly publication.

• Proofreads/edits government/public affairs communication from HACU’s D.C. and California offices.

• Writes/edits news briefs, official communications, member alerts, website content, and for print and online products.

• Writes content for marketing communication products and assists with writing event scripts.

• Writes and distributes news releases/photos and serves as a media contact for HACU. Assists with outreach to media and campus media contacts in national markets.

• Develops news and digital content for social media and online news.

• Coordinates communication with other HACU social media channels and partner organizations.

• Maintains calendar for coordination of deliverables for magazine trade ads.

• Assist with maintaining subscriber lists, magazine advertisers and coordination of distribution for The Voice Magazine.

• Provides communication and social media support at conferences hosted by the Association.

• Other duties as may be assigned.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Marketing or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

• Minimum of three to five years of experience in news writing, editing. Experience working in higher education communication preferred.

• Experience with digital and social media tools and platforms, including, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Knowledge of Associated Press writing style.

Hours: 40 per week, full-time

Three writing samples will be requested from interviewees.
