I would rather be here than anywhere. It’s us against the world. It certainly opened my eyes. It offers safety and strength in numbers. I’m more confident from being here and learn about other members and all their experiences”.“It’s given me a reason to go outside and interact with human beings. It’s been a lifesaver, really. We don’t have many friends outside of ASPIE. It has helped with my depression and anxiety. It also offers peace and quiet. I’m very deaf and making friends is even more difficult for me. Coming here helps me and strengthens perception that not everybody is negative. I don’t want to stop coming here”“ASPIE has helped me. Meeting other people with Asperger’s face to face has enabled me to make friends with people as alien as I am. I am not on my own – has helped lift my mood – it’s meant another event in my calendar and is part of my routine. It adds to my learning about socialising. It feels safe and predictable which is good. Positive support and helpful.”What parents say about ASPIE….“We just had to write to thank you for setting up ASPIE .Wednesdays at ASPIE are the highlight of our son's week, always to be relied upon as a friendly club with lots of interesting activities. Acquaintances and friendships have developed to provide the group with a reliable friendly network in an often difficult world for Asperger adults. The laid-back atmosphere disguises the careful thought and planning that has gone in to provide exactly what Asperger adults enjoy.”00What our members say…“The greatest exclusive club in the world. Because adults with Asperger’s are ‘wired’ differently (sometimes unable to communicate easily, seeming awkward, difficult and clumsy) they can encounter numerous problems and have usually been bullied throughout childhood, teens and beyond. Some are able to ‘pretend to be normal’ and manage to fit in and find employment but often at a highly stressful cost. Others, however, do not receive any help or support and become withdrawn and isolated, unable to cope with everyday living, spiralling downwards into depression and despair even though they are highly intelligent and long for acceptance, employment and inclusion. The effect on these adults and the families involved in their care is devastating and long lasting. This however, needn’t be the case as those with Asperger’s are highly intelligent, honest, reliable and capable of intense concentration and with a little understanding can succeed in higher education, hold down jobs and live independently.00So what are we all about?Asperger’s, part of the autistic spectrum, is a high anxiety condition and a ‘hidden’ disability.Aspies do not suffer from having Asperger’s Syndrome but very often suffer from the way they are treated by the rest of society.
