To provide key contributions in this area to the UG and PG teaching programme. To enhance the Department’s existing strengths in linguistics with a focus on variation and change in the English language. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities% TimeResearch: Develop and carry out personal research programme of high quality in sociolinguistics that complements and enhances existing strengths in linguistics within the Department of Modern Languages. Develop and sustain a national and international reputation for research through the regular dissemination of findings in formats consistent with REF targets (e.g. leading peer-reviewed journals, collections and monographs), presenting results at conferences, or exhibit work at other appropriate events. Contribute to the writing of bids for research funding.40 %Teaching:Support the teaching objectives of the Department of Modern Languages by developing and delivering high quality teaching to students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, through allocated lectures, tutorials, and seminars.Take a key role in the development and delivery of the BA in English Language and Linguistics by devising and teaching modules on linguistic variation and change in English, as well as contributing to other linguistics modules offered to languages students.Take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting fresh teaching and learning methods and materials to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.Supervise students, providing advice on study skills and helping with learning problems, setting and examine coursework and exams, and providing constructive feedback. Successfully complete the PG Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) if not already suitably qualified.40 %Administration, leadership and academic engagement:Carry out administrative, leadership and academic engagement tasks associated with the Department and Faculty, as directed by your line manager.20 %Internal and external relationshipsInternal: Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of Modern Languages in consultation with the Director of Programmes and section leader for Linguistics.Research priorities will be agreed within the strategic framework of the research theme of which you are a member, e.g. Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research. Member of the Modern Languages and/or Faculty committees relevant to the administrative duties assigned. New appointees will be assigned a mentor to guide their development and aid their integration into Modern Languages and the University.
