Job Title: British Isles continuous GNSS Facility (BIGF) Manager

School/Department: Faculty of Engineering, Nottingham Geospatial Institute.

Salary: £37,394 to £45,954 per annum pro-rata, depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this range is subject to performance.

Job Family and Level: Administrative, Professional and Managerial Level 5.

Contract Status: This post will be offered on a fixed term contract to 31 March 2016.

Hours of Work: Part Time (14.5 hours per week over 4 days per week).

Location: Jubilee Campus.

Reporting to: Dr Richard Bingley.

The Purpose of the Role:

The role holder will join the team working as the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded British Isles continuous GNSS Facility (BIGF) and will be responsible for the management of the facility including the maintenance of the BIGF archive of data in Receiver INdependent EXchange (RINEX) format and derived products (station coordinates and velocities, tropospheric parameters and ionospheric parameters) in a variety of formats, the maintenance and development of the BIGF website, the handling of BIGF user requests for data and derived products, and comprehensive reporting on BIGF to NERC.

The role holder will be supervised by a member of NGI academic staff, in their role as BIGF Head of Facility, and will also be required to work closely with the BIGF Developer, who is responsible for creating the derived products.

Candidates should hold a good honours degree or equivalent, and preferably a master’s or doctoral degree, in a geomatics or surveying related discipline. Knowledge, understanding and experience of the use of high-level GNSS data and derived products are essential. Knowledge, understanding and experience of Linux operating systems, Linux-based computer programming using Shell/Perl scripts, Linux-based computer programming for website development, and computer programming using databases are also essential.

Candidates must have interpersonal skills to work with outside organisations in academia, government and industry, and time-management and prioritisation skills. Candidates must also be able to work both on their own initiative and as part of a team, and should have enthusiasm for the scientific research being carried out by BIGF users, a willingness to continue learning and acquiring new skills, a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to motivate others.

| |maintaining and developing: a series of Google maps; information on the services provided by the facility and the science | |

| |carried out by BIGF users; information on access to data and derived products; statistics on data availability; a form for| |

| |BIGF users to make requests for data and derived products, all done via Linux operating systems and Linux-based computer | |

| |programming for website development. | |

|3 |Handling of BIGF user requests for data and derived products: |25% |

| |Undertake all aspects of the management required for the handling of BIGF user requests for data in Receiver INdependent | |

| |EXchange (RINEX) format and derived products (station coordinates and velocities, tropospheric parameters and ionospheric | |

| |parameters) in a variety of formats, including: receiving BIGF user requests from academia, government and industry; | |

| |ensuring that the request form on the BIGF website has been completed to a sufficient level of detail to meet NERC’s peer | |

| |review mechanisms and reporting; liaising with BIGF users over their exact requirements for data and derived products; | |

| |providing BIGF users with the most suitable data and derived products for their proposed science application; dealing with| |

| |any service feedback and complaints in accordance with NERC policies. | |

|4 |Comprehensive reporting on BIGF to NERC: |25 % |

| |Undertake all aspects of the management required for the comprehensive reporting on BIGF to NERC, including: the | |

| |maintenance and development of a core information system using databases to meet the evolving technical and budgetary | |

| |reporting demands of NERC; preparing a variety of reports and presentations for NERC that portray elements of the use of | |

| |the facility and its scientific utility to academia, government and industry. | |

|5 |Any other duties: |10 % |

| |To liaise with BIGF collaborators (government agencies and academia) and ensure their continued contribution. | |

| |To engender a good working relationship with all BIGF users in academia, government and industry, and encourage and track | |

| |dissemination of their results based on the use of the BIGF archive of data and derived products in scientific | |

| |To expand the BIGF user base to existing and new scientific disciplines, throughout academia, government and industry, | |

| |using a range of generic and user-specific promotional mechanisms, within the budget provided by NERC. | |

Scope of the Role:

This role is required to carry out the project management for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded British Isles continuous GNSS Facility (BIGF).
