Teacher Education Program

Teaching Assistantship #14

Technology

Start Date: September 16, 2008

Application Deadline: Monday, June 11, 2008

Notification Deadline: June 21, 2008

Basic Function:

Teacher Education Teaching Assistantships support the teacher education program and the faculty teaching in it. TA position #14 is designed to provide TEP students knowledge and skills in the use of computers and other educational technology for classrooms, as well as support the Teacher Education Program as a whole.

General Information:

The elementary and secondary TEP prepare Masters level candidates for positions in the public schools of the State of Washington. To this end the programs support approximately 14 Teaching Assistants annually to assist in conducting courses, facilitate program elements, work with partner schools, and support the ongoing TEP renewal process. The TEP TA positions are most likely to be awarded to doctoral or advanced M.Ed. candidates who have a keen interest in teacher education and have deep knowledge of the purposes of education in a multicultural democracy and of the functioning of the public P-12 education system. TEP TA positions are grouped in seven main categories according to the skills and knowledge required: Content-Area Methods; Multicultural Education; Cultural Foundations; Assessment; Learning, and Development; Special Education; Technology.

All TEP TAs are required to participate in TA orientation which takes place in mid-September of each academic year and to attend a professional seminar on Fridays throughout the year focused on preparation for various instructional assignments and collaborative work in teacher education. TEP TAs are appointed for a one-year term with the possibility of reappointment for a second or third year. TEP TAs are evaluated quarterly with respect to both their work in courses and their other responsibilities.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

TEP TAs work an average of 20 hours a week on duties connected to assigned courses, field work in partner schools, and the TEP program overall. Duties may change each quarter, and may include the following: assist in one TEP course per quarter as a TA to the assigned faculty member, facilitate Field Based Seminars both on campus and in the field, supervise TEP students in field work placements, serve as liaisons with partner schools, participate in scoring TEP student performance assessments, and be involved with the renewal of the elementary or secondary TEP program. Applicants must be certain their own class schedules will allow them to participate in assigned duties. Because of the changing needs of the program from quarter to quarter, particularly those surrounding the program renewal process (that can effect both secondary and elementary TA positions), TAs must be prepared to be assigned to provide support for courses and activities that may differ somewhat from their initial assignments. All such changes will be negotiated with each TA as needed.
