Department of Health ServicesGraduate Student AssistantPosition AnnouncementSpring 2021Position Title:Teaching AssistantCourse #/Title:HSERV 572: Public Health Planning, Advocacy and Leadership SkillsSupervising Faculty:Amy Hagopian, ProfessorEmployment Period:March 16 – June 15, 2021Hours/FTE:10 hours/week (25% FTE) Note: Hire contingent to minimum course enrollment of 18 studentsPosition Description:This class offers MPH graduate students the opportunity to master basic concepts, analytic tools, and skills for health program and policy planning, advocacy, evaluation and leadership skills under the close mentorship of faculty and teaching staff. We will organize, in advance, a number of projects with community-based organizations or agencies so that MPH and other graduate students can work through real-world public health problems. Many of the students in this class will complete their practicum requirement through this class.Tuesday and Thursday sessions will typically comprise didactic lectures and discussions of key competencies. On Fridays, students will meet in project group to tackle the quarter-long group projects with clients.Duties and Responsibilities:The TA will:Work closely with at least three project teams (each with 2-3 students) over the course of the quarter; this may involve meetings outside of scheduled class timeMark up and grade individual and group projects for the students in the TA’s teamsSet up and maintain Canvas sitePrepare a lecture for the didactic portion of the course (content will be determined in collaboration with faculty)Suggest supplemental reading materials for the syllabus pertaining to skills and projectsOrganize the menu of available projects and solicit student interest during the week before classes begin, and work with faculty to assign students to these projectsHelp maintain relationships with participating organizations, especially for those organizations providing the projects the TA is supervisingMinimum Education Required:Current Masters StudentDesired Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:Students who have successfully completed this particular class are especially encouraged to consider the TA position, and will be preferentially consideredStudents who have been active in community-based organizations and therefore understand the best practices involved in academic involvement in such organizationsExperience with (and/or interest in) teaching, especially at the graduate levelEligibility:Must be a matriculated student during the employment period stated aboveMust be registered for 10 credits during the employment period (or eligible for a waiver of this requirement)Salary: This is an Academic Student Employee (ASE) position governed by the UAW Contract and paid in accordance with the TA/RA Salary Schedule associated with the student’s academic department. Department of Health Services students are paid according to the Regular Salary Schedules.Tuition: This position does not include a tuition waiver.Benefits: This is not a benefits eligible position.
