John 1:47-51 - Contemporary Liturgy

32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - C

Greeting

Blessed be the Lord God,

the God of the living and the dead.

May the life-giving Spirit of Jesus be with you all.

Introduction and Litany of Praise

The liturgy today assures us that there is life after death.

Life is not a journey to nowhere;

it is a journey to a new heaven and a new earth.

So our hope rests not on human wisdom

but on the word and power of God. (pause)

Lord Jesus, sometimes we live as if there is no afterlife,

caught up as we are in earthly concerns:

Lord, have mercy.

You have gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us:

Christ, have mercy.

You want us to be people of the resurrection,

who raise up the downcast and downtrodden:

Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A God of all the living,

in the resurrection of Christ Jesus

you have given us the life

which even death cannot destroy.

Remember your unshakable promise

and strengthen us to live in this world

as your new creation.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever. AMEN.

B God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

God of all the living,

we come to you in faith,

longing to be transformed in Christ

as children of the resurrection.

Work in our times the wonders of your grace,

so that the whole world may see

that those cast down are being raised up,

and all creation is moving toward fulfillment

through the One who is the beginning and end of all,

your Son who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever. AMEN.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

P Our God is a God not of the dead but of the living. We pray to God for everything that makes life valuable and meaningful.

CM Our response is: Lord of life, hear our prayer.

Please repeat:

1 That those who enjoy the pleasures of life, as if there is no other life beyond this one, may set their hopes on the heavenly treasures which alone give true and lasting happiness. We pray in faith:

2 That all suffering and dying people may share in our faith in the Risen Lord,

and find strength in the knowledge that God loves them in life and beyond death.

We pray in faith:

3 That all those persecuted for the Lord’s name may stand firm in their hope

and come to inherit eternal life. We pray in faith:

4 For our relatives and friends, and for all who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again. We pray in faith:

P God of Jesus,

God of the Apostles and Saints,

God of our ancestors and all our beloved ones,

keep us all in your love, now and for ever. AMEN

Prayer over the Gifts

Creator of all that lives

we come before you with the gifts that you have given us;

bread and wine, food and drink,

symbols of life and joy.

May they become for us

the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ

who lives with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever. AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

Let us proclaim our faith and hope in our risen Lord

as we pray:

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil

and grant your peace to those who have died

in the hope of living in your everlasting peace.

Free us from the fear of death,

as we wait in joyful hope

for our own resurrection and the fullness of life

with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you said:

‘God is not the God of the dead, but of the living;

for to him, all of them are alive.’

Look not on our sins,

but on the faith of your Church,

and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom,

where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace

Everything else will pass away but love will remain forever.

Let us give one another a sign of Christian love.

Invitation to Communion

This is the BREAD come down from heaven; [holds up BREAD]

whoever eats of it will never die.

This is the CUP of eternal life: [holds up CUP]

whoever drinks of it will live for ever.

Prayer after Communion

God of the living,

you want us to live even beyond death.

You have shown us that life is meaningful,

that death is not the end

but a completely new beginning.

Strengthened by the Eucharist we have just received

may we share our hope with those for whom life makes little sense.

We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Blessing (based on 1st and 2nd Readings)

May the God of Abraham,

the God of Isaac,

and the God of Jacob bless you. AMEN.

May the Lord Jesus Christ comfort your hearts

and strengthen you in every good work and word. AMEN.

May the Lord who is faithful,

strengthen and guard you from the evil one. AMEN

And may the blessing of God,

+ the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

come down upon you and remain with you for ever. AMEN.

Dismissal

The Mass is ended.

Go and show your gratitude to God

by loving and serving your sisters and brothers.
