Pure Love

1 Corinthians 13:1 - 8

1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails.

Warm Up:

“Those We Love”

They say the world is round – and yet

I often think it’s square

So many little hurts we get

From corners here and there

But there’s one truth in life I’ve found

While journeying East and West;

The only folks we really wound

Are those we love the best.

We flatter those we scarcely know;

We please the fleeting guest,

And deal full many a thoughtless blow

To those we love the best.

Introduction:

• James gives us the definition of “Pure Religion” when he tells us to care for the widows and orphans…

• John gives us in chapter 3 verse 16 of his gospel the definition of “Pure Love”:

John 3:16 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

• The Apostle Paul continues the clarity of the definition of Love in his letter to the church at Corinth in the Text today:

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Closing:

• David understood God’s Love:

Psalm 63:1-4 (NKJV)

1 A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.

2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.

3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You.

4 Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.

• In Revelation, the first church that was admonished was Ephesus:

Revelation 2:2-4 (NKJV)

2 I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;

3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name's sake and have not become weary.

4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

• John challenged us about Loving this world’s goods:

1 John 2:15 (NKJV) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

[pic]

• No Wonder Paul in out text in 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 gave us this beautiful explanation of Love!

The Legend Of Two Hebrew Brothers:

One brother was married with children while the other brother never married. When it was time to gather the fields, the married brother set himself on getting up in the night and taking sheaves from his field to the field of his lonely brother whom he loved very much and wished he had a family like he did.

The bachelor brother determined the same night to take sheaves from his field and place them in the field of his brother he loved so much because his brother had a wife and children to care for and he only had himself.

After carrying several sheaves to each other’s field they finally met in the process. They shared their stories and embraced for hours sharing their love for each other.
