Sermon Discussion Guide 10/19 - 10/25 VGroup Meetings

!Sermon Title: "More Than a Feeling"! 1 Corinthians 13:4-7!

Rock Theology: In the words of Nat King Cole, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return." We all want to be loved and have someone to love, but do we really know what it means to love? Do

!we understand the weight of that simple word and understand that it's "More Than a Feeling?" Today we'll take

a deeper look at Paul's words in 1 Corinthians about love and how we can practice true love in our lives.!

Start your meeting by taking attendance and welcoming new guests. Choose an Icebreaker:!

Who was the first person you remember having "More Than a Feeling" for? Did it last or, as the song says, did they "slip

!

away?" If willing, share why it didn't endure. OR Share a song that brings back feelings and/or memories for you.

Discussion Questions: (45 mins)!

1. We'll be focusing on vv. 4-7, but get started by reading through all of 1 Corinthians 13. The three definitions of love are

! 1) Love is C__________, 2) Love is C_______________, and 3) Love is E___________. !

2. In John 15:13 & 17 Jesus says, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends...This is my

command: Love each other." Read 1 John 3:16-24 and answer the following questions.!

1. Who do you love enough to lay down your life for? Are you willing to lay down things like pride, preferences, etc. to

maintain a love relationship with family? Friends? Jesus and the church?!

2. If Love is Costly, what are you willing to pay to show others you love them? How do we try to earn love at times?!

3. Knowing Christ was/is patient with us (2 Peter 3:9), how should that affect our love for others? What action steps

!

can you and your group take to show that kind of love to believers and non-believers alike?!

3. Take a look at Galatians 6:1-10 to how we can love others with consideration, remembering that the "law of Christ" (v.2)

is to love each other, see how we are to fulfill that law.!

1. What does Paul say we should do with those who are caught in sin? What has our church and THE Church's

culture become when dealing with sin? Is this the correct attitude of love? Where do you draw the line with handling

people "gently?"!

2. How does this passage say we "deceive ourselves?" Who's actions should be the only ones we judge?!

3. Who should we "especially" do good to? What does it show the world when we speak to each other with hateful or

!

heated attitudes instead of a loving one? Where do you/we tend to be less considerate with other believers?!

4. The word "endures" in our passage is a military word meaning "to sustain the assault of an enemy." It has the idea of

holding up under trial, of perseverance in spite of difficulties.!

1. Share a time you could have "bailed out" on something or someone you felt love for. What was the result of

enduring the difficulties and sticking it out? Explain.!

2. How can you have an enduring love in your relationships and church? Read Ephesians 5:21-33 and discuss.!

! 3. What are some daily actions/practices that lead to the kind of enduring love Christ has for us?!

Optional songs for closing: < "Your Love" - Brandon Heath > < "Love is On the Move" - Leeland > YouTube it!!

Legend has it that, in his old age, the Apostle John had to be carried into church meetings because of his frail state. At the end of

every meeting he would be helped to his feet to give a word of exhortation, and he would invariably repeat the same one - "Little

children, love one another." Having heard the same words time and again, the disciples finally asked why he always said the

same thing. He simply replied, "Because it is the commandment of the Lord, and the observation of it alone is sufficient."

Brothers and Sisters, let's put this Biblical definition of love into practice today and every day. Allow your love to "cover a

!

multitude of sins" and through your example show the world who you follow.

Expanded Study: For a description of Jesus take our passage today and replace the word "love" with the name of Jesus.

If you replaced "love" with your name, would it be an accurate description of you? Where do you need improvement in

your love life?; Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers - 1 John 2:3-11; God's Love and Ours - 1 John 4:7-21; Love for

Enemies - Matthew 5:43-48
