New! Senior Center Registration

Everyone who comes to the Senior Center and participates in any of the activities is now required to fill out a registration form. The form includes name, address, emergency contact, and other pertinent information. Your will be given a “Senior Center Code of Conduct” handout to read with the form and once the form is turned in, you will receive a registration card that is yours to keep. Registration forms and codes of conduct will be available at the front desk, nutrition desk, Jenny’s office or just ask a staff member to get you one.

OOA Kitchen gets award! Claudia and the kitchen staff at the Office for Older Adults received the Excellence Award from the Health Department. Only 14 out of 500 establishments are given this award. Stop by the kitchen and congratulate them for their hard work and deficiency free inspection.

Stuff the Bus Once again we are taking part in United Way of Medina County’s, “Stuff the Bus” campaign. 1 in 5 children in Medina County are at risk of being unprepared the first day of school. We are hoping to get at least one item from each senior who comes to our center. Please see the list of needed items posted at the Senior Center. The box to collect items will be in Jenny’s office. Thanks for helping the kids of Medina County!

FARMER’S MARKET – UPDATE!

at the Medina County Office for Older Adults

The 2015 Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program will be coming in June. MCOOA will have applications available on Friday, June 12th. You must complete a 2015 application; a changed 2014 application can not be accepted. The coupons will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, beginning on Thursday, June 18 at 8:30a.m. at our office - 246 Northland drive, Medina, Ohio. Please keep your completed applications until that time – any application received before the distribution WILL BE RETURNED. If you know someone who needs an application, please let them know they will be available. The income guidelines are 185% of poverty level. This includes ALL household income, even if you live with someone not related to you. If you live alone, you can make up to $21,774. 2 persons in household $29,470. If you have more than that, the guidelines are on the application.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

The 2015 Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is funded by the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) and provides eligible participants with $50.00 worth of coupons to purchase fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from participating farmers. The purpose of the SFMNP is to improve the nutritional health of low-income seniors and to increase business for local farmers. Mobile markets will be set up in July and August and will be posted when the dates are set. Coupons expire on Oct. 31st. Please make sure you use all the coupons by Oct. 31st.

All 186 coupon packs were given out. There is a possibility we may receive more coupons. Call or stop by the OOA to be put on the waiting list.

fun and entertainment! All are invited regardless of age to enjoy the summer sun and music in our courtyard patio area. Picnics will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm on the following dates: July 10, July 24, Aug. 7, and Aug. 21. The cost is $5 for Adults and $3.50 for seniors and children. Please be aware that the picnics will take the place of our regular Fri. luncheon.

Groups and Classes

Nifty Needle workers – Meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the Craft Room at 9:30am.

Painting Group – Meets every Wednesday beginning at 10am in the Craft Room. Bring your supplies and learn different techniques. This class is full. Call to be put on the waiting list.

Bible Study – Meets every Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Courtyard Room

Medina Seniors Incorporated – a social group for seniors 60 and over – Tues. July 14th the meeting will begin at 12:00 at the Senior Center. Aug. meeting: 8/11/15 at 1:00.

Sewing machines are available in the Rec. Room for your mending or sewing projects. Machines and thread are provided.

Watercolor Class Barbara Johns teaches a watercolor class on Thurs. at 1:00. This class is full. Call to be put on the waiting list.

Parkinson’s Disease Support Group 7/2/15 (Th) & 8/6/15 (Th) at 1:00 in the dining room.

Friends in Focus: a support group for the Visually Impaired. 7/13/15 (M) & 8/10/15 at 12:00 in the Craft Room.

Support Groups

Line Dancing – meets every Monday at 2pm in the Dining Room. The cost is $3 per class, the first class is free.

Tai Chi Class – every Friday at 1:30,

short form. Class meets in the Healthy Corners Room. The first class is free. Call for more information. Fee

Exercise is available Mondays at 10:30 and Fridays at 9:30 & 10:30am in the Healthy Corner Room. This group uses dynabands and light weights to strengthen muscles. Monday & Friday classes are led by a volunteer.

Wii Bowling League takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am in the Rec Room. Scores will be posted.

Yoga Class- Weds. 3:00-4:00 No floor exercises. The instructor is Lisa Wittman. $3 per class.

Arthritis Foundation Approved Exercise Classes (2 times)– meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:15am in the Healthy Corner Room. The class is taught by a certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor from Medina Village. Most exercises can be done while sitting. An additional class has been added from 9:30-10:15 and is senior-led using the Arthritis Foundation Exercises.

Blood Pressure Screenings – 10:30 to 11:15 every Tuesday. Provided by Medina Village Retirement Community.

Friday B/P screenings will be held at 10:00. Provided by Right at Home on 8/7,

Crossroads Hospice B/P and Ask A Nurse on 7/10 & 8/14,

Comfort Keepers on 7/17 & 8/21,

A representative from Community Legal Aid will be here on Thurs, Aug. 13th from 9:30-11:30. Call the office to make your 30 minute appointment.

An attorney from Gwen Perry Law Firm will be here on Tues. 7/21 & 8/18 from 10:00-12:00. You must call to reserve your 20 minute appointment. Elder law questions only.

AARP volunteers are once again filing taxes for free (No age limit).

Leo’s Jolly Jammers treat us every month with their practice Jam Session and then a dance. Everyone is invited from 1:00-2:30 both days!

Pool Tables are available for use for everyone age 60 and over. Join the rest of the pool sharks weekday mornings from 8am to 12pm for tips or just for fun.

Jokers

This game is played using a game board, marbles, and playing cards. A little like Aggravation. Call for details if you are interested in trying this new card game.

Readers Theater Group

Every Weds. at 1:00. Instructor Zoya Wilson will lead the Reader’s Theater group. No memorization required. All parts are read. If you are interested, speak with Jenny. $2 per class.

Euchre Tournament

On Thurs. July 16 and at 1:00 the Medina Senior Center will welcome residents from Seville Meadows, The County Home, Western Reserve Masonic Community, and the Medina Senior Center to play Euchre! Everyone will have score sheets to keep track of high scores. An awards party will be given in the fall. Join in the fun! The next Euchre tournament is on Thurs. Aug. 13th here. Call Jenny to sign up!

Movie Matinee Join us at 12:15 on the last Wednesday of every month for a movie in the Rec Room! Only 25 Cents to see a newly released movie! Includes a Root Beer Float.
