MY REVIEW

Introduction

Honeybees are a very important resource within the United State. Without them we would not have honey or beeswax. All

these resources come from the honeybee hive. Using wax secreted between scales like plates on the underside of their

abdomens, they build clusters of cells called combs. Those combs are put together to form a hive. Within the hive there

are three types of honey bees, the queen, the workers, and the drones. The workers are females that work on the hive

and go gather pollen. The drones are the males which mate with the queen. After the queen mates with a drone the drone

dies and another drone comes to mate with the queen. A queen honeybee lays about 2,000 eggs per day. She will never

leave her hive alone. When she leaves she lets off a stink so it attracts the male bees. Honeybees are a very

interesting insect and that is why I chose it.

Development

Some of the key points in my article are that the worker bees, the one that create and care for the hive, are all

young. All of the older bees stay in the hive, rest, and eat. Another key point is the growth from an egg to a bee.

After three days the egg hatches into a larva. In about six days a larva grows to the size of an adult bee, filling its

cell. Then a worker covers the cell with wax, and the larva inside the cell spins a silk cocoon and becomes a pupa. In

about 12 days the process of changing into a winged adult is completed, and the new bee comes into a new life. One

thing I found striking about these key points is how a honey bee is born. It is very interesting and must be a very

cool thing to watch in person. Another striking thing about the key points is how the younger bees must do all the work

while the older bees do nothing. The key points are very relevant to the study of insects because they tell how bees

are born and how the hive works. One thing I agree on in my article is how they say how bees are very harmful if you

mess with their nest and that is true! Also I don’t really have anything to disagree within the article because I do

not know much about honey bees. Five new vocabulary terms from within the article are propolis, pheromone, drone, royal

jelly, and beebread. Propolis is basically bee glue and pheromone is a horrible stink the queen lets off before she

leaves the hive so male bees follow her. Drones are one of the three types of honey bees and they are males that mate

with the queen. Royal jelly is bee milk that is fed to the newly hatched larvae. Finally, beebread is a sort of food

that is made mixed with pollen.

 Conclusion

This article has influenced me in thinking deeply about this topic because after reading it I want to learn new facts

about the honey bee. Also, I would like to study more insects similar to the honey bee because it interests me a lot.

Another reason this article has influenced me in thinking deeply about the honey bee is because it is a very unique

insect and studying it just makes me very excited about getting to study more. Very specifically will I be able to use

the information and knowledge from my article to create my journal article because the article is very descriptive and

explains the life cycle of the honey bee. Also, it uses great detail so I will be able to explain everything in even

greater detail then the journal author does. The information in the article can be used by my target audience because

when they see the honey bee in the wild they will be able to tell about it to their friends and tell about its life

cycle. And, say they see a honey bee egg in the forest. They will know when it will hatch and what it will eat and when

it will be an adult bee. Another group of people that would find this information more useful would be beekeepers. They

would need this information so it will help them keep their bees safer. For example, when if they read the article then

they would know how to get the bees to make their hives where you want it to be. Also they would know to keep the hive

close to flowers with pollen so they bees can make food.
