Assessment #7: Professional Developmenta. The Assessment: During the course of their studies at Northern Illinois University, foreign language education candidates engage in professional development opportunities that strengthen their linguistic and cultural competence and promote reflection on practice as beginning teachers. Starting in the first methods class, candidates are required to maintain a record of any professional development activities, memberships in professional organizations, work in the community to promote the study of foreign languages, and opportunities in which they reinforce their language proficiency outside of their coursework. Thus, they begin completing this assessment in the first methods class (FLMT 490) and continue through the second methods class (FLMT 491) and student teaching (FLPT 485). The assessment serves as the basis for group discussion in each methods class. It is formally scored at the end of student teaching. Assessment #7 was revised in 2012 and 2016 to ask candidates to more deeply describe the learning that they gained from the different professional development activities, and to more thoroughly ask them to formulate plans for becoming an active participant in the profession in the future.
