II. Mission Statement

The primary purpose of the Section on Academic Affairs is to advance dental and dental hygiene education by supporting efforts to strengthen curricula, teaching, assessment, learning tools and methods, and faculty development activities.

Goals and Objectives

• Goal #1. To offer programs of quality for the benefit of the Section membership and to other members of the ADEA. The annual section program was entitled “Rethinking the Admissions Interview: Predicting Clinical Performance and Professionalism in Dental School”. It was jointly sponsored by the ADEA Sections on Academic Affairs, Dental School Admissions Officers, Student Affairs and Financial Aid, Educational Research/Curriculum Development: the Special Interest Group on Legal Issues and the American Society for Dental Ethics.

• Goal #2. To play a leadership role in dental education. Section members participate at all levels in ADEA. Additionally, the section is very active in surveying Academic Deans across the country so we can all learn from each other and implement best practices at our respective schools.

• Goal #3. To maintain open, viable communication within the membership.

This section, under the supervision of ADEA, continues to maintain an active listserv for its membership. The listserv continues to facilitate discussion of pertinent topics across institutions and solicit opinions on a variety of issues.

IV. Accomplishments

• The major achievements this year was a well planned and well attended section program: Rethinking the Admissions Interview: Predicting Clinical Performance and Professionalism in Dental School. The Focus was on Best Practices in Admissions Interviewing. A detailed description of the program can be found on page 40 of Program book for the 85th Annual Session & Exhibition, Curricular Change: It’s Time.

• Various surveys of Academic Deans provided valuable information for all the schools.

• We had an Academic Dean’s meeting in conjunction with the other fall meetings in Nashville, Oct. 27-30, 2007. The theme was “National Boards: Changes and Updates.” The general theme of the 2007 Fall Meetings was “Professionalism: Integrity…Within.” We are planning another Academic Dean’s meeting in conjunction with the ADEA Fall 2008 Meetings, Oct. 22-25, 2008, in Philadelphia. Members, who are Academic Deans, please hold the date and plan to attend. Also, stay tuned for more information.

• The project pool stands at $6,458.64 as of December 2006. (We are awaiting updated numbers). This would be a good time for someone to develop a project for funding.

V. Membership and Attendance

A. Total membership for the section as of March 2008 is:

B. Total attendance at the section’s 2008 Annual Session educational program was over 100. It was difficult to get an accurate number. There also were at least 4 competing Faculty Development Workshops and another section program that could have affected attendance, however the room was packed.

C. We are unable to tell which attendees were Section members.

IX. Meeting Minutes

American Dental Education Association Annual Meeting

Academic Affairs Section Business Meeting

Sunday, March 30, 2007 3-4 PM

Dallas, Texas

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm by Chair Dr. Beemsterboer. Other officers present: Dr. Pam Overman, Dr. Marilyn Lantz and Dr. Leslie Roeder.

Dr. Beemsterboer opened the meeting with introductions and a description of the section officer structure changes. Dr. Pam Overman will assume the chair. Dr. Leslie Roeder is the chair-elect, and Dr. Marilyn Lantz is councilor.

Councilor Dr. Marilyn Lantz provided a report from the Section Meeting:

• Dr. Lily Garcia is putting together a list of individuals with expertise that can be used to assist constitute task forces. Sections members were asked to contact Dr. Garcia if they are interested in being on the list.

• An important resolution is being discussed and considered for approval at the Section meeting- “Competency for New Dentists”

• ADEA has four strategic initiatives

o Help prepare institutions for the future, examples include CCI, MEDPORTAL, Educational Policy and Research Imitative

o Developing a workforce for the future

o Developing leaders for the future

o Delivering value to the members, examples Journal of Dental Education, annual meeting, fall meeting, online CE sources,

The section program was cosponsored with a number of different sections on Sunday, March 30 from 1:45-2:45. The program was titled “Rethinking the Admission Interview: Predicting Clinical Performance and Professionalism in Dental School”. The program was well received with standing room only attendance.

Nashville was a successful fall meeting of the Academic Deans with the opportunity to meet with Gene Kramer about National Boards and to spend the afternoon discussing topics of interest. The response we received from Gene Kramer is attached to these minutes. Section members felt that academic deans participating in the Fall 2008 meeting would be useful. Suggested topics for discussion included National Boards and surveys. The response from Gene Kramer may serve as a starting place for our discussions at the Fall 2008 meetings. It was felt that time to discuss topics of interest was extremely helpful.

Discussion by the section occurred about continuing concerns about changes in the National Board. Dr. Marsha Pyle addressed some of the concerns and gave information about the changes.
