Marco Ferrari, Secretary ADM December 2005

Message from the President

It is the end of my first year “in office”, and I must admit that I did not anticipated the amount of work and pressure that came with the position. Organizing the annual meeting(s), dealing with current issues regarding the Dental Materials journal, memberships, fellowships, and the financial status of the Academy, have all contributed to it. I am pleased to report, however, that the Academy is doing well: the impact factor of the journal is over 2, on-line submissions are now available and the number of submissions are growing, the accounting transition to Portland has been completed and a transparent accounting has been implemented, and the interest in becoming an ADM member/fellow has been steady. Enthusiasm and involvement of your members in running the Academy and raising its profile are encouraging and at this time, there are no issues of concern.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year with good health, joy, prosperity, and fulfillments.

N. Dorin Ruse (dorin@interchange.ubc.ca)

2005 ADM Lake Louise meeting

The 2005 ADM meeting was held in conjunction with the Composites @ Lake Louise meeting in Lake Louise, Canada. Based on the feedback received, the meeting seems to have been a successful one. We had over 50 attendees, 8 invited presentations, and 31 posters from 14 countries. The success of the meeting is primarily due to the outstanding presentations of Michael Sadoun, Sumita Mitra, Guido Kickelbick, Michel Degrange, Michael Swain, Jack Ferracane, Kenneth Anusavice, and Robert Ritchie. The meeting was made possible by the support received from the sponsors (US$25,000). The Academy is expressing its sincere gratitude to 3M-ESPE (major), Ultradent (medium), Straumann (medium), Ivoclar Vivadent (small), Kerr, and BISCO for their contributions.

2005 ADM Paffenbarger award

At the end of the 2005 ADM meeting in Lake Louise, the Paffenbarger price was awarded to Fernanda Calheiros for her poster presentation entitled “Influence of radiant exposure on degree of conversion, contraction stress and properties of composites”. Fernanda received the congratulations of the jury, a 500$US cash award, and free registration for the 2006 ADM meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Fellowships and Awards 2005

Each year, the members of the Academy of Dental Materials, at various dental schools around the world, present awards to the most outstanding students or student researchers in the field of Dental Materials. The award consists of an engraved plaque, a copy of which may be found on the ADM website. The Fellowship and Awards Committee dispatched some Student Award plaques in 2004 to dental schools around the world. The list of Student Awards for 2005 can be found on the ADM website at .

Members are reminded that requests for Student Award Plaques for 2005 can now be made in writing or by email direct to Richard Curtis at King's College London, UK (richard.curtis@kcl.ac.uk). The form at should be completed so as to provide all the information required to dispatch your award as efficiently as possible. Where possible, please give six weeks notice in advance of your Award Ceremony so that the plaque may be ordered and shipped in plenty of time.

The Fellowship and Awards Committee also welcomed two new Fellows into the Academy this year. Our congratulations go to them and we look forward to their active participation in the Academy in the years to come.

These Fellows are: William Dunn and

John Dyson

New applicants for Fellowship are invited for 2005. Academy members in good standing may apply for Fellowship in the Academy. Applications must include a current c.v. and two letters of recommendation from current Academy members with Fellowship status. An engraved plaque is awarded to each Fellow. The criteria for Fellowship and mailing information are available on the Membership page of the ADM website.

Dental Materials – Editor’s Report

During 2005 we have completed a transition to the on-line submission and review system of Elsevier Science. This is a powerful system that takes time to learn all the features – like a Ferrari sports car! But it is user-friendly, as is shown by the increased submissions to the journal. I am excited by the quality of papers that we are receiving and the new areas of research progress that they describe. There are also some areas, such as bond-strengths, that attract many ‘me-too’ studies without adding significantly to our understanding. It is a hard but often necessary task to reject such work, even though the results may be scientifically sound. Dental Materials as a discipline embraces laboratory as well as clinical materials, and we shall be shortly publishing some powerful new studies on the science of investment materials. Amongst clinical materials, dentistry principally requires biostable biomaterials. These remain a major emphasis in our journal. Their science is every bit as fascinating as biodegradable scaffold materials. Many thanks to all of our contributors and reviewers – the latter being acknowledged in the December 2005 issue.

OHINARI: Elsevier participates in this project which distributes journals free for developing countries. This project will provide Dental Materials in these parts of the world.
