Reflective Research PaperChristian MerzFerris State UniversityAbstractIn the following paper, the author will analysis two articles that include: Medication dosing errors in Pediatric Patients Treated by Emergency Medical Services and Medication administration practices among children’s nurses: a Survey. The author will reflect on the written articles and conclude if they are a credible source of research that supports a nursing evidenced based practice. Nursing ResearchThe healthcare field is growing fast with advancements in detecting disease along with curing and treating sickness. Today nurses are required to ensure they are proficient with skills and knowledge to care for patients’ safely in a variety of healthcare settings. Research can provide nurses solid evidence to incorporate into their practice to improve care to the patient. Nurses should be able to determine credible sources to advance their knowledge base. “The purpose of this assignment is to re-evaluate references used to guide practice decisions, using knowledge gained from the first few weeks of class” (Ferris State University, 2013, p 8).CredibilityIn order to evaluate any article the nurse must be able to indentify if the article was generated from a credible source. There are numerous sources of data out there to obtain knowledge that include the newspaper, magazines, on-line blogs, books, and medical journals. On-line blogs, newspapers, and magazines are not credible sources to obtain valuable research information. Medical and nursing journals are examples of a trustworthy source. These articles are considered to be peer reviewed articles or journals. “Peer review journals are the hallmark of scholarly literature to present the best evidence for practice” ( Guerrieri, 2012, p. 48). Peer reviewed articles are usually written by individuals who are specialist in the field. All articles are evaluated before they can be published. According to Murphy (2001), “nursing research generates and test knowledge on how to best assist individuals to advance their health, to reduce for illness, to cope with illness, and to promote the health of families and communities. Research is obtained differently through surveys, random samples, interviews, experiments, and observation. There are two methods researchers use that include quantitative research and qualitative research. According to Nieswiadomy (2012), qualitative research is concerned with subjective meaning of experiences to individual ( p 6, para 4). An example of qualitative research would include interviews, observational studies and group sessions. According to Chitty and Black (2011), “Quantitative research requires standardized experimental designs, measurable variables and statistical analyses” (p.254). This data can be presented and analyzed in numerical numbers. Once the data is obtained and analyzed, it can be divided into groups depending on the quality and strength of the data. There are five different groups that provide a grading scale for nurses to determine if they can integrate new knowledge into their practicing skills. ReviewArticle OneArticle ones title is “Medication administration practices among children’s nurses: A survey”. The authors of this article included Maryanne Murphy and Alison While. This study came from the British Journal of Nursing which is a peer reviewed journal. This piece of writing is considered to be a credible source and is ranked “ four” on the grading scale of research. According to the hierarchy of evidence for nursing intervention studies level six refers that “quantitative study: observation of a group to determine the development of an outcome” (Oregon Health & Science University). This study was designed to identify improvement for nursing who administer medications to children. Obtaining the data was collected in a non-experimental method based on nursing staff answers. The development of the survey was borrowed by an instrument used by Markirit Armutlu of St. Mary’s Hospital Center in Montreal, Quebec and Cecil Deans. The data was obtained solely through surveys. The study concluded “a lack of adherence to hospital policy and the frequency of interruptions in the medication administration process are important practices to avoid” (Murphy And Alision, 2012, p 928). This article is defined as source of nursing research because it provides evidence in improving nursing care. Article TwoArticle two reviewed was title the “Medication dosing errors in pediatric patients treated by emergency medical services”. The authors of this article included John Hoyle Jr.., MD, Alan T. Davis, PhD, Kevin K. Putman, EMT-P, Jeff Trytko, MS, and William D. Fales, MD. This study was funded by the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Michigan. This article is considered a credible source and ranked at a level four. Level four includes, “case-control study: a comparison of subjects with a condition with those who don’t have the condition to determine characteristics that might predict the condition” (Oregon Health & Science University). This study determined that children were frequently give wrong doses of medications compared to children with pre-hospital weights reordered. This article provides strong nursing evidence that will improve children’s outcomes. Significance to ResearchThe nursing profession is a multidimensional career. Nursing knowledge must continue to grow in order to provide current, safe care to patients. Without new knowledge, nurses cannot improve their skills and interventions. Nurses turn to research to identify new knowledge. They should be able to identify and understand how research is developed. It is also important that they are able to interpret data from the research created and integrate this knowledge into their clinical practice. Nurses should review nursing journals because they address nursing concerns seen in their professional settings. Not all research is created equal. It is important to understand how research studies are set up and how they analyze results. Some studies can provide inaccurate information due to personal assumptions, lack of funding, collecting data inappropriately and interpret data incorrectly. Nurses should know what source information is coming from because there are different types of research. According to Nieswiadomy, “nursing utilization research starts with existing research that needs to be implemented in practice, evidence-based nursing practice seeks a solution to a clinical problem” (2012, p. 282). In the profession of nursing it is not uncommon for nurses to be rushed; therefore they have little time to research. Nurses will save time if they are looking at the source of the article. Nurses should tune into systematic reviews because they provide clinical answer. Having access to new knowledge to make sound, informed, patient care decision is critical to the profession. According to the Merriam – Webster on-line dictionary “quality” is defined as very good or excellent and “safety” is defined as freedom from harm or danger (Merriam -Webster, n.d). “Research seeks to advance new knowledge with the result to improve people’s quality of life and improve patient safety” (Nieswiadomy, 2012, p. 3). Nurses should always be concerned and evaluating the care provided to patients. One way to see improvement in patient care is reviewing professional outcomes and client outcome. The American Nursing Association (ANA), Scope of Standards of Practice (2010) states, “the Registered Nurse integrates research findings into practice” (Chitty and Black, 2011, p. 340). New information is created from research and the advancements in the medical field. Nurses are required to continue their knowledge base through research. Nieswiadomy defines nursing research as the “systematic, objective process of analyzing phenomena of importance to nursing” (p. 3). All nurses regardless of the education level should inquire and use research in there healthcare settings. ReferencesChitty,?K.?K., & Black,?B.?P. (2011).
