Virginia Wildflowers (this is the heading for each page)

Collect 5 wildflowers. Wildflowers are not planted by people. They are found in wild places (forests, meadows, road side ) AND they might also be found in your yard hiding in your grass; these are commonly called weeds by gardeners. They are merely plants that are growing where a person does not want them. ( You can, sometimes, find wildflowers growing in your lawn!

You must find, take a photo, and collect the flower, stem and leaves. You will carefully press them immediately upon picking them.

Drying and Pressing wildflowers.

To press plants, place it between 2-3 layers of newspaper (this will be demonstrated in class), making sure that all parts of the plant are flattened out. Flatten out plant if necessary by using your fingers to bend leaves flat or begin to flatten flowers such that the internal structures (carpel, stamen, petals) will be visible. Place a couple heavy book or two on top of the paper and leave undisturbed for 7-10 days, or until items are completely dried.

Mounting Wildflowers

Mount one flower per page of your journal using a rectangle of clear contact (clear labeling paper or wide (approx 3 “) clear packaging tape to completely cover and seal your dried specimen. Avoid folds or creases in the clear material.

Using the internet, determine the identification of each of your 5 specimens. Remember scientific names are either typed in italics font OR are hand written with each part underlined separately. Ex: Homo sapiens or written with each part underlined Homo sapiens

Here is a web sites to try. There are many others .

Under each plant/flower record the common name and scientific name.

Also print out the PHOTO you took and an image, BOTH IN COLOR that clearly shows the flower, stem and leaf from the internet for each flower. This will obviously look the same as your specimen. The page layout is shown below.
