All information you provide will be kept confidential.

Resume Building

Your resume is your activities sheet for high school. By providing information about your accomplishments and talents you can help your counselor get a better understanding of who you are. Your resume may also be used by counselors, teachers, and administrators who are writing letters of recommendations for you. The Scholarship Committee will use resumes for selection of relevant scholarships. And finally, students can utilize their resume when seeking employment.

The Resume Builder has just 3 easy steps:

1. Add entries

2. Rearrange the contents

3. Save and print!

ADDING ENTRIES

• Use the drop down menu under “add a new entry” to enter sections relevant to you. For each section you choose, you will be prompted to enter information. Make sure you are using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

[pic]

Once you add entries your screen should look like this:

[pic]

• You can click the yellow pencil on the right hand side to edit/update the entries. When entering information, be specific and consistent throughout each entry. Or click the circle with the “ - ” through it to delete an entry.

REARRANGE THE CONTENTS

• After you have added all the entries, you need to click on Customize Your Printable Resumes

[pic]

• And Create a new print format where you first need to choose a format (either Style 1 or Style 2). Then click and drag each section to change the order of how it will appear. You can also choose what entries you want included by clicking the boxes on the left hand side. Once you have completed these steps decide what you want to name the document, type it in and click save at the bottom of the page.

Careers

On the careers tab you will find two main categories: explore careers and what are my interests?

[pic]

Explore Careers

Think you might be interested in a particular career? Check it out here.

• Click on explore careers & clusters to research possible college majors, find out what skills are necessary for the job, what tasks and activities are performed by those who work in that field and what typical wages are. Some careers have short video clips to watch as well. Like what you find? Click +add to my list to access it again later under favorite careers & clusters.

What are my Interests?

Not sure about a future career? Complete the cluster finder and/or career interest profiler.

Cluster Finder

• Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “let’s begin”

[pic]

• You’ll go through several pages of questions about activities you enjoy, personal qualities you think you possess, and school subjects you are interested in.

• Once you have answered all the questions, your answers will be used to match you to career clusters. All the clusters will be ranked and displayed for you to view in the results section.

[pic]

• Click on one of the clusters ranked highest or one that is of interest to you. After exploring the cluster, if you want to be able to easily access it again, click +Add this cluster to your list and it will show up when you click on favorite careers and clusters on the main page of the careers tab.

Let’s explore a career cluster!

• Click on one of the clusters that is listed under “Your top cluster(s)”

• You will be directed to a page relevant to that area (example: marketing)

[pic]

• The overview tab will give you more information on the cluster as well as give you an employment outlook for that field.

• Click on credentials to view what type of education or certification you may need.

• Related careers will show specific careers in the career cluster area. By clicking one, you will be directed to a screen that gives more information about that career including an overview, knowledge and skills you’ll need, tasks and activities you’ll perform, and average wages for the job. If you are interested in what you find and want to be able to easily access the job again, be sure to click on +add to my list so that it will show up under favorite careers and clusters on the careers tab.

[pic]

• If you go back to a Career Cluster and click on related majors, you’ll see possible majors that you can take in college. By clicking on a major, you will be directed to a screen of schools that offer that major.

• Plan of Study shows classes you may want to take in high school. Be sure to consult with your school counselor!

Career Interest Profiler

Take this to help you discover what types of work activities and careers match your interests.

• You’ll answer questions about work activities that people do at their jobs. Think about whether you would like, dislike, or are unsure how you would feel performing each task.

• You will then get scored in the following areas:

Realistic: Realistic occupations frequently involve work activities that include practical, hands-on problems and solutions. They often deal with plants, animals, and real-world materials like wood, tools, and machinery. Many of the occupations require working outside, and do not involve a lot of paperwork or working closely with others.

Investigative: Investigative occupations frequently involve working with ideas, and require an extensive amount of thinking. These occupations can involve searching for facts and figuring out problems mentally.

Artistic: Artistic occupations frequently involve working with forms, designs and patterns. They often require self-expression and the work can be done without following a clear set of rules.

Social: Social occupations frequently involve working with, communicating with, and teaching people. These occupations often involve helping or providing service to others.

Enterprising: Enterprising occupations frequently involve starting up and carrying out projects. These occupations can involve leading people and making many decisions. Sometimes they require risk taking and often deal with business. Conventional: Conventional occupations frequently involve following set procedures and routines. These occupations can include working with data and details more than with ideas. Usually there is a clear line of authority to follow.

Click here to view occupations that match your scores!

Colleges

On the “colleges” tab you will find three main categories: “my colleges”, “college research” and “scholarships and money”.

My Colleges

Colleges I’m thinking about is where you will maintain a list of schools you are interested in. Whenever you are using the colleges tab and find a school you may want to attend, make sure you click +add to my list for easy access. By keeping this list updated, you will see information on when these colleges are visiting Irondequoit High School! You will also receive an automatically generated e-mail informing you when that college schedules a visit.

[pic]

Once you have added colleges to your list, you will see application deadlines, a quick link to e-mail admissions at most colleges, scattergram (see page 17 for more information on scattergrams) graphs and be able to quickly access the college’s website.

[pic]

During your senior year, you will need to move “Colleges I’m thinking about” to “Colleges I’m applying to” before you submit a Transcript Release Form (this is the BLUE FORM in the counseling center).

College Research

• You can use college match to see which colleges might be looking for students with your qualities

o Colleges Looking For Students Like You shows schools that are likely are interested in receiving applications from students similar to you. Please note this does not guarantee admission.

o Colleges Other Students Like shows you what colleges are most likely to overlap with the colleges on your list (Naviance analyzes applications from thousands of high schools to determine this list).

o Colleges That Have Accepted Students Like You shows colleges that have accepted students with GPA and test scores similar to yours.

• With college compare you can add colleges to see how your GPA and test scores compare to others from our school. To compare the colleges already on your list click the compare me link on that page. The averages shown are students from IHS that have been accepted to that particular college. Averages are displayed in green when your number is higher and in red when your number is lower. The column labeled Accept shows the number of students accepted out of the number of students that applied.

[pic]

• College lookup allows you to find colleges by name, state or country. This will bring you to a page that gives general information about the college as well as information regarding admissions, application history, and scheduled visits

• College search provides you with a college search tool that will match your preferences. Once you have picked criteria important to you, you will narrow down your list of schools, and you will be able to compare these colleges using historical admissions results from IHS.

• College resources provides links to many useful websites including financial aid, test prep, college athletics, and military information.

• College maps allows you to select colleges that accept our students, colleges where our students are attending, and the top 20 most popular colleges where our students applied and see a visual.

[pic]

o For example, Colleges that accepted our students is seen above. Clicking a college on the list will highlight that college’s marker and tell you how far away it is.

[pic]

• Scattergrams provides you with a scattergram graph (see example below) comparing your GPA and test scores to IHS students who have applied and have been accepted or denied at a specific college.

[pic]

• The large circle will represent where you fall

• The squares represent acceptances (green on your computer screen)

• The X’s (red on your computer screen) represent denials

***In the example above the (red) circle shows where Mary Beth Practice (with her 86.00 GPA and 1100 SAT) would be among past students from IHS that have applied to SUNY College at Brockport.

• Enrichment programs allows you to search by topics to find an special programs to attend in areas of interest to you.
