VISITORS AND GUESTS

Joining us for breakfast were Kim East - RESTOR International, Hans Bischoff – Planners Financial and Jodie’s husband, James Williams.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

On July14th, Tessa & Mark are celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary. Birthday wishes on July 21st to Don Tamelin.

CLUB PRESIDENT BARRY SPARKES

Good to see so many people. Barry shared a bit of history. July 11th, marked the beginning of the 1812 United States invasion of Canada which ended in a victory for the British. 50 years ago, on July 20th, Apollo 11 successfully landed on the moon.

Closing remarks…”Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it”

FOUNDATION

$ 115 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Dave Elgie was the lucky holder of the draw for $ 15.

Please note, all contributions will go the Annual Fund unless you direct Barry otherwise.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – DOUG SLOWSKI

Doug was happy to see the rain, not so happy to be caught outdoors when it came. Big smile from several of us. In response to his request, Dale received a ‘gigantic’ bowl of freshly made porridge. Happy dollar from Jan – soon she and her sister are off on a ladies shopping and gambling adventure. Happy dollar from Tessa on their soon to arrive puppy. Rachel had a fun evening helping at the Dragon Boat festival with Rotary North. A new task for Jodie, she is working on the administration side of the September Terry Fox run. Happy dollar from Don T. Thanks to the magic of needles, the pain in his shoulder has disappeared. Sad dollar from Lee, the boat is still in the shop. A thank-you from Barry for Janeane Coutu’s re-boot of our computer. Dale W. did not draw a joker. Next week – July 25th, there will be

$ 280 in the pot.

JAN’s ROTARY MINUTE

Starting in 2002, the Rotary Foundation partnered with eight universities around the world to create Rotary Peace Centres for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are selected annually to earn either a professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies or a master’s degree in a range of disciplines related to peace and security. The first class graduated in 2004. The average grant for the two year degree program is $ 75,000 and $ 12,000 for the three month certificate program. Today there are over 1,200 Rotary Peace fellows promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict in their lives, in their careers, and through their service activities.

Brian McFadden spoke about the peace exhibit at the Vancouver Island Military Museum. This was built in 2013, thanks to the generous donations of

$ 5,000 from the Rotary Club of Lantzville and three other Nanaimo Rotary clubs.

KIM EAST, surgical care coordinator, RESTOR International, spoke about their two week 2018 medical mission to Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. The focus of the mission was to perform medical reconstruction on burn victims, host medical educational sessions, promote fire prevention, introduce fire injury prevention education and promote gender equality. This was a follow-up from their 2014 & 2016 missions to Ethiopia. The team of 13 was a mix of medical doctors, nurses and non-medical volunteers. The team triaged over 100 patients and performed 39 reconstructive procedures. Twenty-two patients were under 10, 5 under 2 and the youngest was 11 months. In Kim’s words ‘the post operation results were outstanding’. There were smiles everywhere. Medical education was the focus of 2 dinners attended by 64 nurses and physicians. Daily, the medical team exchanged ideas and medical knowledge with the Ethiopian medical staff. The fire education program was delivered by Gayane, a fire fighter in Kelowna. The STOP, DROP, ROLL message was introduced and well received by over 500 children in schools. Gender equality was addressed in ‘Girl Day’ presentations and by example. 9 members of the mission team were female. One young woman told everyone how the mission had changed her life. Gratefully she said “I am inspired and promise I will make a difference. I won’t disappoint”.

RESTOR INTERNATIONAL

Founded in 2004, RESTOR International (formerly Rotaplast Canada) is a non-profit organization providing free reconstructive surgery to disadvantaged people in developing countries. Through the generous support of Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, and individual donors, RESTOR has provided financial and volunteer support for missions to Chile, China, Ethiopia, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Starting in 2019 funding has been secured for a 4 year emergency surgical program in Nepal. Volunteer opportunities are available for medical and non-medical personnel. RESTOR is a “Rotary encouraged organization”.

ROTARY CLUB BUSINESS NOTES

Barry encouraged everyone to take a look at the duties and responsibilities of each of our club committees. At our July 25th meeting, there will be sign-up sheets for committee volunteers.

Introduced by Randy, the Nanaimo Clippers are looking for school sponsors for 100 Clipper game tickets. At a cost of $ 500, the Club endorsed the concept. Randy will report back on which school we will sponsor. Club participation will be advertised in the game literature and Club members will have the opportunity to share attendance at the game with the school that we sponsor.
