Gospel Meditation

July 17, 2022 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Hoping in Jesus and Mary

In the Carmelite convent one lives in continuous prayer, that is to say, in permanent touch with God. An this is what pleases me most. Believe me, I don't know what I would give for one hour of prayer. On the other hand, the Carmelite purpose fills me with enthusiasm: to pray for sinners, to spend one's whole life sacrificing oneself, never seeing the fruits of prayer and sacrifice and yet united to God so that, in this way, his redeeming blood circulates in her and in the Church, in its members, so that they become holy. Even the Carmelite coat of arms fills me with enthusiasm: "to suffer and to love." Isn't this what the Most Holy Virgen was doing, she who was the most perfect model for us? Yes, in Carmel we begin to do what we'll be doing for all eternity ? loving and singing the Lord's praises. And if this is what we'll be doing in heaven, isn't this the most perfect thing we could be doing now?

I could give you many other reasons, but this has gone on long enough. Don't think I'm trying to convince you to become a Carmelite or a nun. The only thing I want you to do is fulfill God's will. Give yourself up to it, with filial simplicity, repeating always this maxim of Saint Teresa even in the most trying circumstances: "God knows it and God loves me." Ask the Most Holy Virgen to be your guide; to be your star, the lantern that shines for you amid the darkness of your life. May she show you the port where you must land to come to the heavenly Jerusalem. It's God's will that we be virtuous. Let's have enough character to be true children of

Mary. We will witness to this if we're obedient, even as our Lord Jesus Christ obeyed because that was his Father's will. Our thinking should be what is suitable for a child of Mary. Let us never allow ourselves to be defeated but to have recourse to the

Most Holy Virgen when we see we're in danger of giving in.

Abraham begs for this presence: "Sir, please do not go on past your servant." With Jesus in her home, Martha is "anxious and worried" because she fails to see the "one thing" that all of her busyness is ordered to: hosting Jesus and enabling her guests to converse with and adore the Lord. Saint Paul attests that God's stewardship is given to him "to bring to completion for you the Word of God." God chooses "to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery" to those who choose him and find in him the source of their contemplation and activity. Whether we are to serve by active work or contemplative listening is God's decision. In either case, how do we serve? Martha and Mary are both honored in the liturgy as obedient disciples, but they show the faces of service: self-concerned and self-forgetful. Which one is the face of our own spirit of service? Jesus, help me to respond to you

wholeheartedly. God bless our Parish!
