UV Safety Awareness Month

Summer has arrived and while the sun is shining bright, it's a golden time to highlight July as UV Safety Awareness Month!

Here are the harmful things unprotected sun exposure can do: ? Cause vision problems and damage to your eyes ? Suppression of the immune system ? Premature aging of the skin ? Skin cancer

There are things you can do to minimize the risk that comes with sun exposure.

Cover Up: Remember to protect your skin and eyes from the damaging effects of the sun. Wearing a hat, proper clothing, and sunglasses (for eye protection) can partly shield your skin from the harmful effects of UV ray exposure.

Stay in the Shade: Staying in the shade between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. will further protect your skin.

Choose the Right Sunscreen: This is extremely important. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) new regulations for sunscreen labeling recommend that your sunscreen have a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, and should protect against both Ultraviolet A (UV-A) and Ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays.

Use the Right Amount of Sunscreen: According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, most people apply only 2550 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. When out in the sun, it's important that you apply at least one ounce (a palmful) of sunscreen every two hours. You should apply it more often if you are sweating or swimming, even if the sunscreen is waterproof.

American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

Stay away from sources of artificial UV light. There is no such thing as a safe tan. The Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention stress that indoor tanning significantly increases the risk of

developing melanoma, basal, and squamous cell cancers. It also causes premature aging of the

skin and suppresses the immune system.

4th of July Safety Tips

Celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in a safe way. More than 50,000 fires

are caused by fireworks every year. Take the proper precautions when operating fireworks. ? Never disassemble or try to make your own fireworks. ? Don't point sparklers, or fireworks at yourself or others, especially while they're being lit. ? Only light fireworks on the ground and in areas that are dry and fire resistant. ? Don't attempt to light multiple devices at the same time. ? Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers. ? Always keep a portable fire extinguisher close by. Also keep a water hose or buckets of water

nearby to put out fires.
