Seize the future. You can choose your furniture, but you cannot choose your moment. God chose us for this momentThe first thing a missionary does is learn the language of the culture. If the culture is our mission field, then we have to learn to speak their languageThe language of this culture is story and symbol with a soundtrackWe have been woefully resistant and stubborn as we have said to the culture that it has to learn our languageThere are no silver bullets on what to do as a church. Jesus is our silver bullet. If he is lifted up, he will draw people to himself (Jn 12:32).A key word for the church is Terroir. It comes from wine and cheese world and means that you can taste the soil and context in the wine or cheese. Jesus loved a city enough to cry over it. Do you love your zip code enough to cry over it?Don’t hear Len calling us to be relevant. Relevant and recency are not the same. Some of the most relevant stuff is the most ancient. Don’t do something new. Do something old in a new way. We grew up learning about the Bell Curve. All nature distributes in this pattern, and in the old world culture did too. Now, we live in a Well Curve world. The extremes are growing and the middle is dropping out. In this world, the middle is exactly where you don’t want to be. You ride the middle of the road, you will be roadkill.Another key symbol for the church is the Mandorla or the Almond. An almond shape is two circles coming together, and the overlap is the almond shape. We don’t want to make compromises or synthesis. We need to learn to bring opposites together. Church ought to be a place where we enjoy what we enjoy and everyone likes what they like, but we also need to lay it down. Show Len what in your church budget you don’t like. The 5 technologies shaping the future- GRAIN: Genetic Engineering, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Info Technology, Nano Technology. Len believes secularization is an academic host. Our culture makes everything sacred: sports, identity, gender, ethnicity, celebrities, political parties…Another key word for the church of tomorrow is Ostranenie. This is a Russian word meaning “to make the familiar strange.” If you want to make something fresh you have to make it strange. You have to defamiliarize it. Jesus did this when he said, “You have heard it said, but I say to you…” Above all else, we must have eyes like the Ostrich watching where they laid their eggs. But our eyes must be set on Jesus. 00Future Church Symposium Highlights/TakeawaysWe need to Carpe Manana. Seize tomorrow.
