DAVID McWILLIAMS SINGING SONGS BY DAVID McWILLIAMS

David McWilliams Singing Songs

By David McWilliams

God and Country

It's just been six weeks now, since I left my home town

When they called out my number, and my turn came round

Now I've a gun in my hand, this land to set free

Told to fight till I'm dead, for god and country

Oh my father he told me, it'll be a proud day

When you fight for your country, in a land far away

He said to make all my foes, bend down on one knee

And come home a hero, for god and my country

To all your dictators, say I've had my fill

One of the commandments, is that you should not kill

And this land isn't mine, it's not hard to see

So how can I be fighting, for god and my country

Let me ask you one question and tell me no lies

Is it worth all this money, for so many to die

Or are you so blind, that you don't want to see

That I'm not really fighting for god and my country

Yes, let me ask you one question and tell me no lies

Is it worth all this money, for so many to die

Or are you so blind, that you don't want to see

That I'm not really fighting for god or my country

Redundancy Blues

Through many a long year my table was full

And among many others I was chosen

To stand in the heat of the factory's hum

While the others outside they stood frozen

Yes my head it was empty, my pockets was full

And my hands and my fingers was itching

And I laughed at the shadows that stood in the cold

While I stood full warm in the kitchen

All my children they laughed as they grew at my feet

And my woman said she loved me dearly

And my vision was blocked by the words from their mouths

So that I couldn't see very clearly

Ah, but one day a man came to my factory

Stood up and said this place is closing

Said I'm sorry my friends, we can't keep you here

For far too much money we're losing

Now the winter is here and my hands they are numb

And for me every door says no entry

There's no turf on the fire, and my heart is so cold

And my belly is always so empty

Now my woman and children have left me alone

And lower and lower I'm sinking

There's no money left for me to take down

To drown all my troubles in drinking

The Silence Is Shattered

From the damned deserted highway, to the stillness of my room

Fading shades of night time, in the fast declining gloom

I wakened by the howling dog, from the place that it is lay

And the hooter hollers calling all of you sinners from your bed.

I gazed down at the street lamp, no longer shining bright

For the dawn has robbed it of is gleam, and stolen all it's light

And the stealthy crawling sunlight, creeps on unsuspecting lives

To waken all their troubles, leave their peacefulness behind.

Suddenly my mind speaks against this enemy

But takes the shutters from my eyes puts this uniform on me

It takes away my freedom, like a falling wingless bird

Then the world shouts out his warning, and the silence it is shattered.

Hiroshima

One morning in June a noise shook the ground

And the people all trembled on their faces lay down

And the sound on the lips, of the world all around

Was the name of Hiroshima

The people lay wrapped in their darkening shroud

The last resting place of a people once proud

And the town that lay under that great mushroom cloud

Was the name of Hiroshima

Now the days passed away and the years they flew by

And those left remaining wished that they too could die

For the people left here are still living lie

In the shame of Hiroshima

So take heed to my words, put your weapons away

Make friends with your foes , let all have their say

Or we have once again, what happened that day

We'll have another Hiroshima

One morning in June, a noise shook the ground

And the people all trembled on their faces laid down

And the sound on the lips, of the world all around

Was the name of Hiroshima

Question Of Identity

My forefathers came, when the land it was open

And built it from nothing, to millions of acres

To live there in freedom, no fears to peruse them

To leave all their troubles, and trials behind them

And they worked , and they slaved, and they better their living

Not chained to the laws, of some other society

Chorus

And yet you try to tell me, that it isn't worth havin'

Try to steal away my name, but my name is my own

And I'm gonna keep it, I'm not a jee jaw in your game.

Oh, your schools and your masters, are trying to tie me

To the rules of your game, and the cold of your highway

In little black boxes, tied tightly with ribbon

Your faces is like faith , behind masks are well hidden

As you strive for the things, that to you may seem golden

And mean something to you, but to me they mean nothing

Chorus

And yet you try to tell me, that it isn't worth havin'

Try to steal away my name, but my name is my own

And I'm gonna keep it, I'm not a jee jaw in your game.

So don't try to change, what you're not understanding

Over me your world, has no jurisdiction

For you can't understand, what you speak of in passin'

So just leave me alone, I don't want know you

I don't want you to show me, where I should go to

For you haven't yet found your own long sought utopia

Chorus

And yet you try to tell me, that it isn't worth havin'

Try to steal away my name, but my name is my own

And I'm gonna keep it, I'm not a jee jaw in your game.

Time Of Trouble

Listen to me is all I ask

To follow you my chosen task

And right now time is fading fast

Into my time of trouble

Into my time of trouble

If I could only take you away

Some other time, some other day

For all my youth, it will decay

Into my time of trouble

Into my time of trouble

If you had only, had me then

There'd be no need, to ask me when

There'd be no need, to pass again

Into my time of trouble

Into my time of trouble

So fare thee well, my darling one

And please remember when I'm gone

My love for you it always shone

All through my time of trouble

All through my time of trouble

Yeah fare thee well, my darling one

And please remember when I'm gone

My love for you it always shone

All through my time of trouble

All through my time of trouble

Echo Of My Heart

Is it the hammer of the rain against my window pane

The whistle of the wind among the trees

That makes fast fading shadows, I can hear again

The echo of my footsteps after me

Don't speak to me of violence part of paradise

Of silver painted ships all made of gold

For the dream of all these things I have to pay the price

Forget the many truths that I have sold.

I remember all the dreams, I used to have of life

Past falling shades of time, that cause to fade

And the tide is fast approaching, like the waters

Remind me of mistakes that I have made.

Is it the hammer of the rain against my window pane

The whistle of the wind among the trees

That makes fast fading shadows, I can hear again

The echo of my footsteps after me

The times are ringing out their tunes and tolling

For the friends that I once knew now slipping past

No longer in positions, as witnesses

Far from this game of life they have been cast

Is it the hammer of the rain against my window pane

The whistle of the wind among the trees

That makes fast fading shadows, I can hear again

The echo of my footsteps after me

In The Early Hours Of The Morning

Oh the sun is gazing down on me

And the day it is a dawning

The sea is washing pebbles o'er the sand

In the early hours of the morning

My eyes are still half closed with sleep

My mind still clouded with dreaming

And the ripple of the wave seems a ghost upon the sea

In the early hours of the morning

The breeze it cast it's spell on me

I can't answer all the things it's asking

And I wonder where it's going to

And where it's coming from

In the early hours of the morning

The mist is dangling darkly o'er the tide

Far out upon the ocean it's hiding

All the secrets of the sea from the crying eyes of men

In the early hours of the morning

I walked to the top of the highest hill

And as I climbed I was thinking

And wondering if you'll be coming back to me.

In the early hours of the morning

I’ll Be Home

I'll be home when summer leaves are green again

I'll be home when winter's long been gone

I'll be home to walk once more with Lorrie

To see again the mountains of my home

It's a long lonely feeling to be lying

In a place where no one knows my name

If I don't get home, to see once more my Lorrie

I think I'll never be a man again.

I'll be home

I'll be home, to hold you once again

I'll be home

As the spring is softly dawning on the meadow

There's just one place on earth I long to be

I can picture all the warm and smiling faces

Round my Lorrie and my mountains by the sea

I'll be home

I'll be home, to hold you once again

I'll be home

As the spring is softly dawning on the meadow

There's just one place on earth I long to be

I can picture all the warm and smiling faces

Round my Lorrie and my mountains by the sea

Leaves That Fall

To catch the wind to bind the sun

Find out where the rainbows run

Those who seek to stand so tall

Are numbered as the leaves that fall

The poet sings his dancing rhyme

Of flitting feet and churches chime

A faint reminder of the past

That stands along through winters blast

The autumn winds so cold they blow

And winter never seems to go

But yet the summer comes again

And breathes upon my window pane

Listen as the night bird cries

How every thing that lives soon dies

There's beauty in her mournful call

There's beauty in the leaves that fall

To catch the wind to bind the sun

Find out where the rainbows run

Those who seek to stand so tall

Are numbered as the leaves that fall

Twilight

When the twilight has come, and stolen the sun from my eyes

The world seems to sleep, as the daylight is swallowed and dies

The land dangles from trees, while a light blowing breeze

Leaves a trace of the morning behind her.

This ghost like illusion, numbs all the nerves in my brain

My heart seems to stop, and wait till it passes again

There's a pain in my fist, as it clutches my breath

And I pray for the clean air of morning.

The waves call out help me, the oceans they don't know where to go

Suck like a sponge, away from the acres they know

And the bright morning sun, his light almost done,

As yet not quite dead, but still dying.

The twilight like me, is something yet nothing at all

It has nowhere to go, nowhere to stand or to fall

It cannot be seen, it's just something between

The before and whatever comes after.

Hey Sally Sally

You used to be here, when I spoke your name

Each time you came, to kill all my fear

Now everything's changed, now you are gone

What did I do wrong, didn't need it to break.

Hey Sally Sally, where have you been?

The rain has stopped falling

And the grass it is green.

What made you so sad, what made you go

I don't seem to know, and I'm feeling so bad

Oh I wish I could see, if we could just talk

Maybe you don't lock, your heart strings to me.

Hey Sally Sally, where have you been?

The rain has stopped falling

And the grass it is green.

Please open your eyes, you know you can't run

From something that's done, and you can't live on lies

Please I won't ask again, come down from that wall

If you don't you might fall, what would you do then.

Hey Sally Sally, where have you been?

The rain has stopped falling

And the grass it is green.

Reaching for the Sun

So long baby, I must be on my way

But I think that maybe, we’ll meet another day

And when we do I’m telling you

I’ll break your heart again

Cause I’m 21 and life’s just begun

And I’m reaching for the Sun

Hey I’m going, my feet they just can’t stand

And it feels girl knowing, that I’m at my own command

The Highway’s free and it’s calling me

And I’ll be a long time gone

Cause I’m 21 and life’s just begun

And I’m reaching for the Sun

I need no reason, to smile along my way

Cause life is so pleasing, be it Autumn be it May

I’m free as air I don’t have a care

and I’ll the reach the sun one day

Cause I’m 21 and life’s just begun

And I’m reaching for the Sun

Sheelo Gone So Long

Sheelo, Sheelo, the sea upon the shore

Whispers to me softly of days I’ll see no more

The mountains, the mountains, so proudly do they stand

How often have I walked there, since last I held your hand

Sheelo, Sheelo, Sheelo gone so long

Sheelo, Sheelo, the things you said to me

And once I gazed upon you no other could I see

A stranger a stranger you never could have been

More precious far than diamonds you still are in my dreams

Sheelo, Sheelo, Sheelo gone so long

Sheelo, Sheelo, you were the sun and stars

You gave to me a rainbow we could have gone so far

Emeralds and rubies, sapphires deep as blue

I’d give them all and more than all, to walk again with you

Sheelo, Sheelo, Sheelo gone so long.

Midnight Sun

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

It's features are changing every flower

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

Growing ever stronger by the hour.

The darkness quickly fading

It's handing out a line

Says you only are borrowing my time

I'll be following behind

Just in case you change your mind

And when evening comes

I'll rob you of your sunshine.

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

It's features are changing every flower

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

Growing ever stronger by the hour.

To walk beneath the tree tops

With the dew drops in your eyes

Listening to the morning sighs

And the lonesome heart that cries

Of the white gull as he flies

I can't forget the things, I don't wish to remember.

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

It's features are changing every flower

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

Growing ever stronger by the hour.

Across the glistening meadows

Over every unseen mile

The green grass seems to smile

Says come join me for a while

And we'll strut along in style

Till you're drunk with all the beauty, I can show you.

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

It's features are changing every flower

Follow the morning sun, it's turning in the sky

Growing ever stronger by the hour.

Fast fades the morning sunshine

Into the evening rain

It's colour softly wane

To some place that I can't name

But I'll be seeing them again

Yes, I'll see them once again

Upon the morrow.

Pretty Bird

Why do you sing you pretty bird

How can you fly so high

When my true love has left me

And here alone am I.

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I wish that I were you

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I'd fly up in the blue.

Oh, hear the piper play his tune

He's playing soft and low

He plays a tune familiar

One that you should know.

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I wish that I were you

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I'd fly up in the blue.

There's nothing tasted sweater babe

Since I started loving you

Tomorrow coloured red and gold

Now it's turning blue.

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I wish that I was you

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I'd fly up in the blue.

No there's nothing tasted sweater babe

Since I started loving you

Tomorrow coloured red and gold

Now it's turning blue.

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I wish that I were you

Pretty bird, pretty bird,

I'd fly up in the blue.
