walkereng : I have attached a file, can you take a look at it and answer the questions at the bottom of the sheet? Your answers will allow me to accurately model the loading and size your beam. Thanks walkereng : Let me know when you come back online JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : Location 1 Floor joist span1 & 2 are12' The roof is stick built and is a 12\6 pitch with wood shake shingles. The span I would like to achieve is 20' with no clolums JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : Both sides of the beam sitting on concrete foundation. JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : New beam#1 and would like to span 20' with no columns. the joist span for #1& #2 are 12'. I have a stick framed 12/6 roof with a cedar shake shingle. The new beam will sit on exterior concrete foundation walls. walkereng : What city and state do you live in? walkereng : Any storage or occupancy in the attic? walkereng : Still there? JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : I live in Fox River Grove Illinois and there is nothing in the attic. walkereng : Before we get started I'd like to point out that a Professional Engineer's standard of care typically includes a site visit to assess field conditions and get an overall understanding of the structure. This can obviously not be accomplished through the internet. The information provided here is meant for planning purposes only (general sizing and budgeting) and is based on the information provided by you. All loading cases considered are for vertical loads only, no lateral analysis has been completed. The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted. walkereng : Hold on while I run a few numbers. structural-engineering/7jx4n-span-20-feet-steel-i-beam-basement-first.html?utm_source=sys&utm_medium=email&utm_content=crev1_vie... 1/3

Can I span 20 feet with a steel I-beam in a basement with first - JustAnswer

walkereng : any depth of beam you need to try and stay within?

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : 8" if I can.

walkereng : There are no 8" options. There is one 10" beam, do you want the details for that?

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : but you tell me what I might need to achieve the span I would like.

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : Yes I would like the information on a 10" beam.

walkereng : You can us a W10x45 (50 ksi) steel beam. This beam is 8" wide, 10.125" deep and weighs 45 pounds per linear foot.

walkereng : You will need to have a local engineer detail your connections, size your support columns and determine foundation requirements.

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : There is another section of the house with a doubled up 2"X8" 12' long That I want to replace with a steel beam what size would I need for that one?

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : How do I print our conservation when we are done?

walkereng : I can give you an equivalent steel beam that has the same or a bit larger capacity as the double 2x8.

walkereng : When we are done, I will switch over to to a format that you can print out easily.

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : That

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : That's what I would like. Also what is the approximate price for the first beam?

walkereng : Prices vary by location and the price of steel futures, so you will need to look on the internet yellow pages in your area under "steel fabricator" and then call several of them to check prices.

walkereng : The most economical section to replace your double 2x8 would be a W6x9. This beam is 4" wide, 5.875" deep and weighs 9 pounds per foot of beam.

walkereng : This beam has more capacity than you need, but it it the lightest section that will work.

JACUSTOMER-7nhpc0gs- : Thank you for your time, advice, answers and expertize! You will get a excellent rating from me. Please make sure I can print this for my customer to read and thank you again!
