|MWEE Essential Elements |List of activities or tasks the educator will perform to support each Essential Element |

|ISSUE DEFINITION |

|Create a driving question that initiates the student investigation of a local and relevant environmental issue, problem or phenomenon. This question will guide the inquiry for the Meaningful |

|Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). |

|What is your driving question that will determine the students’ issue investigation? | |

|How will you generate student interest and curiosity in the issue? How will you assist students in | |

|the development of supporting questions that help find answers to the organization question focused | |

|on your issue? | |

|MWEEs should be anchored to formal goals for learning and student achievement. How is your issue | |

|investigation, thus MWEE, connected to curriculum occurring in the classroom? | |

|OUTDOOR FIELD EXPERIENCES |

|Provides students with a series of experiences within which current concepts, processes, and skills related to your issue are understood and developed. This can include field experiences led by |

|the teacher or environmental education providers either on school grounds, in the community or other sites across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. |

|How will you help to use students’ previous experiences and knowledge to further understand the issue| |

|and develop plans to help them answer their questions? | |

|Provide a brief list of the series of outdoor experiences that will occur and an explanation of how | |

|students will work together during each experience to actively explore the driving and supporting | |

|questions. | |

|How will students analyze/interpret data and information gathered during this essential element of | |

|the MWEE? | |

|What materials and supplies will be needed to accomplish these tasks? | |

|What partners or providers will help you? (if applicable) | |

|ACTION PROJECTS |

|Challenges and extends students’ conceptual understanding and skills through design and implementation of a student directed action project to address the issue of focus. Action projects are |

|essential to the MWEE model and should occur separate from the outdoor field experience(s). They should occur on the school campus or in the community to determine solutions to the chosen issue. |

|Action projects can include projects related to watershed restoration or protection, everyday choices (e.g. composting, recycling, energy conservation), community engagement or civic action. |

|How will the students select and design a solution that addresses their chosen issue? | |

|Please describe the action project or, if student-directed, potential action projects. How will you | |

|and others support the implementation of the student-led project? | |

|How will you ensure that implementation of the student-led project extends learning and | |

|investigation? | |

|What materials and supplies will be needed to accomplish these tasks? | |

|What partners or providers will help you? (if applicable) | |

|SYNTHESIS & CONCLUSIONS |

|Encourage students to assess their understanding and abilities and provide opportunities for educators to evaluate student progress. This should include activities for reflection and sharing what |

|they have learned. |

|Provide a list of post-project activities that will occur, how the activities will allow students to | |

|reflect on what they have learned, and how the students will share knowledge and experience with | |

|other students, parents, etc. | |

Optional: If you are a teacher requesting funds to attend a professional development training to further your capacity to lead the above MWEE, please fill out the below chart. For requests to develop and implement a professional development training please complete and upload the Professional Development Trainings Narrative Form.

|Professional Development |

|When will the training occur? | |

|Who will be attending the training (grade levels)? | |

|Please describe the training’s objective? | |

|Why will this training be beneficial to the attendees? | |
