This Vitae is does not include a listing of all activity prior to 2000 when I joined the music faculty at the University of Michigan, School of Music. A significant amount of activity occurred during the 10 years with Count Basie and 10 another years with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and almost 3 years with Lionel Hampton. 19) December 3, 2004: Kellogg Auditorium, Battle Creek, MI - Brass Band of Battle Creek. For this concert I played trombone as a member and a soloist. I also conducted one selection. This world class ensemble featured a host of stellar soloists including Steve Mead (euphonium), Jens Lindemann (cornet), Rich Illman (trumpet), Scott Hartman (trombone), and Wycliffe Gordon (trombone).

20) December 4, 2004: Performance Center, Benton Harbor, MI - Brass Band of Battle Creek. For this concert I played trombone as a member and a soloist. I also conducted one selection. This performance included a clinic performance by myself and Wycliffe Gordon.

This national television broadcast honored the career of music legend Smokey Robinson. Guest performers included Stevie Wonder, India Arie, Joss Stone, Gerald Levert, Brian McKnight, Usher and Gladys Knight.

28) October 7, 2004: Ritz Carlton Hotel, New York City, NY – Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra performance for WBGO’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. This performance featured Bill Cosby sharing personal stories of great jazz musicians including Philly Joe Jones, Clark Terry and others.

29) October 2, 2004: Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, Ann Arbor, MI – Lead Trombone with the Paul Keller Orchestra.

30) September, 13th – 16th: 2004 Colorado Civic Center, Ft. Collins, CO - Nnenna Freelon and the Count Basie Orchestra. I was the musical director and arranger for this performance. I also performed as a solo trombonist.

35) August 20, 2004: Count Basie Theater, Redbank, NJ - Nnenna Freelon and the Count Basie Orchestra. I was the musical director and arranger for this performance. I also performed as a solo trombonist. This concert was the Centennial Celebration of Count Basie who was born in Redbank, NY.

36) August 14, 2004: Newport Jazz Festival (Rhode Island) 50th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival. Lead trombonist for the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra. Performance with Clark Terry and James Moody.

37) August 1-9, 2004 San Jose Jazz Festival. Solo trombonist with Tierney Sutton. Performance of my arrangements written for James Moody. Conducted Youth All-Star Jazz Combo. These duties included being the master of ceremonies for stages and artist relations for special performers, local political leaders and corporate level sponsors.

40) June 19, 2004: Detroit Institute for the Arts, Detroit, MI – This concert was a special celebration to honor NEA Jazz Master, Horace Silver. I played trombone and wrote four arrangements to be performed for Mr. Silver. I also conducted the rehearsals and concert for this ensemble.

44) April 29 2004: Park in the Plaza, Newark, NJ – The Gerald Wilson New York Band. This performance was part of an outdoor fund drive for the 25th Anniversary of WBGO jazz radio station in Newark, NJ. Other performers included Mulgrew Miller.

45) April 26, 2004: Northview High School, Northview, MI – Guest soloist with the Northview High School Jazz Big Band. I also played as a soloist with a local jazz trio. The concert ended with an all-star 10 trombone jazz choir performing my arrangements. Other players included trombone instructors from Western Michigan University and Central Michigan University.

46) April 25, 2005: St. Clair Hotel, San Jose, CA – Soloist with local jazz trio for the San Jose Jazz Society.

47) April 3, 2004: Kellogg Auditorium, Battle Creek, MI - Brass Band of Battle Creek. For this concert I played trombone as a member of the band and as a soloist. This was special concert that featured the world premier of a composition/arrangement by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon honoring Mohammad Ali. I was featured as a soloist in this composition.

48) March 5, 2004: State University of New York, Purchase, NY – Lead trombonist with the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra.

49) February 29, 2004: Jazz Vespers, Midland, MI – This performance was in conjunction the NAACP Act-So jazz ensemble in Midland MI. I performed as a trombone soloist.

50) February 28, 2004: Garden City High School, Garden City, MI - Paul Keller Orchestra. This concert featured classic big band arrangements. I performed as a trombonist.

51) January 31, 2004 Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC - Lead trombonist for Michel LeGrande with Patti Austin, John Clayton co-director. This was a very special concert featuring the music, arrangements and conducting of Michel LeGrande. I performed as the lead trombonist and soloist.

52) December 6, 2003: Kellogg Auditorium, Battle Creek, MI - Brass Band of Battle Creek. For this concert I played trombone as a member of the band and as a soloist. 53) December 5, 2003: Miller Auditorium, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI - Brass Band of Battle Creek. For this concert I played trombone as a member of the band and as a soloist. This world class ensemble features a host of stellar soloists including Steve Mead (euphonium), Jens Lindemann (cornet), Rich Illman (trumpet), Scott Hartman (trombone), and Wycliffe Gordon (trombone).

54) November 30, 2003: St. Luke Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, MI – This was a special concert for the congregation. We played secular brass music.

55) October 27, 2003: Birdland Jazz Club, New York City, NY – This was the CD release party for the Gerald Wilson recording made in February 2003.

56) October 15 – 18, 2003: BET Studios, Washington, DC – Bass trombonist for the BET Walk of Fame Orchestra directed by Patrice Rushen. This national television broadcast honored the career of music legend Aretha Franklin. Guest performers included Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Gerald Levert, Eddie Levert, Seal, Teena Marie, Ronald Isley, Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar and many others.

57) October 4, 2003: Marriott Hotel, San Jose, CA - San Jose Jazz Orchestra in concert. I was the conductor and arranger.

58) September 6, 2003: San Jose, CA - San Jose Jazz Orchestra in concert for the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau. I was the conductor and arranger.

59) August 15, 2003: MLK Library, San Jose State University, San Jose, CA – This was the Opening Gala for a multi million dollar “state of the art” new library for San Jose State University and the City of San Jose. I was the musical director for this Opening Gala. I arranged two songs for this event that featured local singers with a jazz big band. We played in the style of Duke Ellington as I conducted the San Jose Jazz Orchestra.

60) August 4 – 12, 2003: San Jose Jazz Festival. Musical Director and arranger for the San Jose Jazz Orchestra. Conducted Youth All-Star Jazz Combo. As the Artist in Residence I performed a host of duties for the San Jose Jazz festival. These duties included being the master of ceremonies for stages and artist relations for special performers, local political leaders and corporate level sponsors. I also was the arranger and conductor for the world premier performance of Nnenna Freelon with the Count Basie Orchestra. I also directed the San Jose Youth All Star Jazz Combo with special guest Phil Wilson.

61) July 28, 2003: Firefly Jazz Club, Ann Arbor, MI - Paul Keller Orchestra, trombonist.

62) July 20 – 22nd, 2003: Dazzles Jazz Club, Denver, CO – A great jazz dinner club in downtown Denver. I performed here with a jazz rhythm section including Kenny Walker on bass, for 3 days.

63) July 13 – 19, 2003: Mile High Jazz Camp, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO – I directed one of the two top level jazz big bands. This jazz camp has a rich history as one of the best jazz camps in the USA. While there, I composed a new composition called “Mile High Chorale” for a mass trombone choir.

64) June 5, 2003: National Arts Club, Gramercy Park, New York City, NY - Carnegie Hall Jazz Band performance for George Wein. This was also the release performance of Mr. Wein’s new book “Myself among Others” Published by Da Capo Press.

65) June 4, 2003: San Jose Jazz Festival Preview: I premiered a new composition and arrangement written for trombone, violoncello, and bass. The violoncello was played by Peter Gelfand, principle violoncellist for the San Jose Symphony. The bassist was Mr. Seward McCain.

66) April 2nd & 3rd, 2003: Muskogee High School, Muskogee, OK – I performed as a soloist, adjudicator and arranger for the annual High School Jazz Festival.

67) February 7-9, 2003: New Trier High School Jazz Festival. Winnetka, IL- I performed as a soloist, and adjudicator for this jazz festival that has grown to be one of the largest in the mid-west.

68) January 18-19, 2003: Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC – Lead trombonist, for all-star jazz orchestra directed by John Clayton featuring legendary jazz vocalist, Nancy Wilson.

69) January 10, 2003: Toronto, Canada – Slide Hampton World of Trombones, Performance as one of the lead trombonists.

70) November 1, 2003: Carnegie Hall, New York City, NY - Carnegie Hall Jazz Band concert at Yale University, Connecticut. I played Lead trombone.

71) October 19, 2002: BET Studios, Washington, DC – Bass trombonist for the BET Walk of Fame Orchestra directed by Patrice Rushen. This national television broadcast honored the career of music legend Stevie Wonder. Performers included Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Brian McKnight, Chanté Moore, Dru Hill, Ed Gordon, Fred Hammond, India Arie, Ja Rule, Eric Clapton, Jacque Reid, Jamie Foxx, Jill Scott, JoJo, K-Ci & JoJo, Kedar Massenburg, Kelly Price, Musiq, and Jamie Foxx. This was a very special show. When Stevie played with us he was simply wonderful.

72) August 21, 2002, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA - Carnegie Hall Jazz Band with Clayton Hamilton Jazz Band (Hollywood Bowl, CA), Lead Trombonist/soloist.

73) August 4th – 11th, 2002: San Jose Jazz Festival: Musical Director and arranger for the San Jose Youth Jazz Orchestra. Conducted Youth All-Star Jazz Combo. As the Artist in Residence I performed a host of duties for the San Jose Jazz festival. These duties included being the master of ceremonies for stages and artist relations for special performers, local political leaders and corporate level sponsors. I also to help secure top jazz artists for the festival. This year the Festival gave me the opportunity to bring Ellen Rowe to San Jose.

Including Slide Hampton, Phil Wilson, Robin Eubanks, Steve Turre, John Fedchock, Louis Bonilla, Jim Pugh, Dave Taylor, Benny Powell, John Mosca, Keith O’Quin, Art Barron, Earl McIntyre, Doug Purviance, and many more. The all-star rhythm section was comprised of Ellen Rowe (piano), John Clayton (bass) and Grady Tate (Drums). This world premier performance featured Toyin Spellman on English Horn.

I. Recordings

➢ Pending Releases as leader

1) Count Basie Orchestra with Nnenna Freelon and special guest Hank Jones: This CD will feature the Count Basie Orchestra and jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, performing no less than 6 of my arrangements for jazz big band and vocalist. I will also write one for a jazz combo featuring trombone and voice. I will function as Musical Director, arranger, co-producer, and trombonist. To be released in early 2006).

2) “The Artistry and Music of Jay and Kai” This recording will be collaboration between Ann Arbor trombonist, Chris Smith and me. The CD will feature original scores and transcriptions by both Jay J. Johnson and Kai Winding. It will also have new arrangements of music performed by Jay J. Johnson and Kai Winding and arranged by Dennis Wilson and Chris Smith. I will function as Co-leader, co-arranger, co-producer and trombonist. To be released in Fall 2006

2) Gerald Wilson New York Big Band 2005. I played lead and solo trombone for this recording. This recording was made on April 12th and 13th, 2005 at the Right Track Studio in New York City. The release date has not yet been announced. Other featured artists included Russell Malone (guitar), Frank Wes (saxophone), Clark Terry (trumpet), Sean Jones (Trumpet), Peter Washington (bass) and Louis Nash (drums).
