Faith’s tent revival

We had a good number of visitors for our Tent Revival this week , We had several visitors from sister churches. The Hackett Sisters sang for us, along with Dillon and Grace, one of our frequent visitors who has a beautiful voice. We enjoyed this very much.

Also, one of our visitors was Antwan from across the street. Bro. Dillon reached Saturday morning and Antwan was very troubled by his message and gave us information that he thought the sermon was especially for him. He said he was lost and the church had prayer with him. Please do not fail to pray for Antwan that he will seek the Lord till he finds Him.

We also had a good number from our church neighborhood this year, including Dale, who visits frequently, and Ms. Dee Gaskin! Ms. Dee is a very well-known songwriter and lives in our church neighborhood. As a prolific and noted songwriter, Dee has been nominated for several awards including the Dove. Her song “Come Morning” received the Singing News Magazine’s Fan Award song of the year in 1979. The Singing News also declared “Come Morning” as the Song of the Decade for the 1980s, as recorded and performed by the Rex Nelson Singers. She also wrote “The Sun’s Coming Up In The Morning.,” and many more. Dee Gaskin songs have been recorded by a vast array of artists such as Governor Jimmy Davis, the Hopper’s, the Singing Americans, the Dixie Echoes, the Speer family, the Florida Boys, the Kingsmen, Wendy Bagwell and the Sunlighters, the John Hagee family, the Inspirations, the Isaacs, the Nelon’s, the Primitive Qt, the Lewis family, Jeff and Sheri Easter, the Perry’s, Karen Peck and New River, the Ruppe’s, Barbara Fairchild, Marty Steward, the Freeman’s, Vern Jackson, Walt Mills, the Bishop’s, Ralph Stanley, the Wilburn’s, the McKamey’s, the Singing Echoes, and many more.

What we were very glad to hear from her was her experience of salvation. She was saved as a 16 year old girl at an old-time Missionary Baptist Church meeting. She said she had not heard preaching like she heard Friday night in a very long time.

We were very glad to have ALL of our visitors. We hope they will all return to worship with us.

WE HAD SOME FUN TOO!

The Tent Revival was great this year. We had games in the afternoon on the parking lot for the children and adults also—those who were able. Shannon Clemons devised a scavenger hunt and the teams were divided, men and women. Two “cripples”(Billy, with his hip replacement and Barry Armour with his shoulder problem)were heading up the winning team. The men won, but there was talk of “cheating.” I think they sorta blocked the passageways for the ladies. Everyone had a good time, it seems.

AN EXPERIENCE OF SALVATION

Sister Sarah Olonde –Kenya, Africa

I greet you all in the name of Jesus. My name is Sarah Olonde. Jesus saved my life.

In 1989, January, on 21st, I had the ____. I went out with a friend of mine to a home fellowship somewhere. I just went there to mock the Christians who do pray when they cry. I did not know that Jesus had a purpose for me to go there, but things changed. When I went there I found myself a sinner. The preacher talked about the Adamic sin because I was not drinking, I was not that drunkard person, so I knew about the sins we usually talk about, but I was lost. After hearing the word of God, the word of good tide to my heart, I went to God. No one called me. I hear of people being called, “Come to Jesus.” No one invited me to Jesus. I went alone. It was me alone. I was not even shameful because Jesus had spoken to me and told me that I’m a sinner and if I don’t repent that day, I would go to hell and I feared going to hell. God saved my life and I am very proud to say that I am saved and I’m longing to see Jesus one day.

Sister Olonde is the wife of Bro. Tom Olonde in Kenya Africa, a missionary in this country. The above was transcribed from My Salvation Experience website. I apologize if there is any misinterpretation/ There was one word above that could not be determined.

An Experience of Salvation

Louise (Meador) Keen, Westmoreland, TN

Taken from “The Experience of Salvation”

I was saved in August, 1940, just after the revival at Rocky Mound Baptist Church. It was at Cross Roads School house during recess while we were playing “church”. One schoolmate was the “preacher”. She had been saved during the revival so she was telling an excellent experience to us. I had been to the altar a time or two so she touched the hearts of three of us girls with her talk. All of us were saved that day. I remember everything was so bright and beautiful. We went across the road to Mr. Oscar Cliburn’s house; he was a good man all children loved. He would walk from his house to his barn singing gospel sings and we would stop playing and listen to him. At the house Mrs. Jewel Cliburn was ironing Mr. Melvin’s white shirt, but I never saw him wear a white shirt as white as that one looked to me that day during his lifetime.

I've dreamed many dreams that never came true,

I've seen them vanish at dawn,

But I've realized enough of my dreams, thank God,

To make me to want to dream on.

I've prayed many prayers when no answer came

Though I waited patient and long,

But answers have come to enough of my prayers

To make me keep praying on.

I've trusted many a friend that failed,

And left me to weep alone,

But I've found enough of my friends true blue,

To make me keep trusting on.

I've sown many a seed that fell by the way

For the birds to feed upon,

But I've held enough golden sheaves in my hands

To make me keep sowing on.

I've drained the cup of disappointment and pain

And gone many days without song,

But I've sipped enough nectar from the roses of life

To make me want to live on.

MATTHEW 22:32-40 “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. The one of them which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus aid unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

TIDBITS FROM “ECHOES FROM THE HILLS”

(OF Tennessee) by J. Harold Stephens

HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE

In the course of electing some new deacons an old bachelor was nominated for the office in a rural mountain church. One of the brethren expressed a degree of opposition when he said: “The Bible says that a deacon is to be the husband of one wife, and pore ole Beecher ain’t got narry one.”

CONTACT MADE

We have all but completely departed from the practice of church discipline. There was a time when the monthly Saturday afternoon Church Conference was devoted largely to the matter of disciplining unruly members. Many interesting stories could be told along this line. In the earlier days of this country there was the account of the women of the church who were being disciplined for seeking too many of the comforts of this earthly life. It developed that they simply wanted to have a fire in the building during the winter months.

A husky giant of a young man was delegated to wait on a fellow member who was reported as having been drunk on New Year’s Eve. The accused was aware of the charge and the assignment. He was out in a field when he saw the investigator coming, and he picked up the only rock in sight. Soon the two were in a fight to the finish, and it did look like they would kill each other in the struggle. Finally, the one commissioned from the church got the upper hand of the accused, and completely subdued him by physical force. In the next Church Conference the report was called for, and the brother arose in sonorous and pious tones to say: “I MADE MY CONTACT, AND GOT RESULTS.”

My Last Visit with Sgt. Alvin York

For many years it was my privilege to know Sgt. Alvin York, the hero of World War I from Pall Mall, Tennessee. Many legends have been built around him. I visited in his home while his dear old mother was still living. Shortly before he died, I visited him in a Nashville hospital, and had prayer with him. He said to me, “Preacher, I had rather have the prayers of God’s people than to have all that the doctors can do for me here.”
