JOYCE ON FILM - Triskel Arts Centre

[Pages:2]JOYCE ON FILM

James Joyce was not just fan of words, but of cinema. He had a penchant for comedy and his acerbic sense of humour permeates his literary work. Several filmmakers have emphasised this element in their adaptations. Others focus on the earnestness, the sexuality or the inherent Irishness of his novels. The Joyce on Film series examines the cinematic highlights in full.

CINEMA NOTES

Cinema at Triskel Christchurch celebrates its fifth birthday this May! Son of Saul is the eagerly-anticipated Hungarian holocaust drama which won this year's Academy Award for best foreign language film, Knight of Cups is the latest cinematic experience from Terence Malick (Days of Heaven, Tree of Life), and Love & Friendship is a charming comedy of manners starring Kate Beckinsale and Chlo? Sevigny.

Along with the regular cinema programme, we have two exciting film seasons. Joyce On Film is a selection of cinematic adaptations of James Joyce's work. The season begins with Ulysses from 1967, and ends on Bloomsday with a special screening of Shem The Penman Sings Again, a Cork production which will be introduced by critic Colin McCracken. Sculpting Time is a selection of films from the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, who passed away in 1986. This celebration of his work marks the 30th anniversary of his passing.
