SUBSTITUTE TEACHER QUALIFICATONS AND PROCEDURES FOR BERKELEY COUNTY SCHOOLS

Persons desiring to become a Substitute Teacher for Berkeley County Schools must have at least a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university. If you are not a certified teacher, you must have completed the Substitute Training PRIOR to applying to a substitute teacher posting. There are a couple of organizations that conduct these trainings. One is RESA VIII, and the other one is West Virginia University, continuinged.wvu.edu . You cannot apply for a Substitute Teacher position until this required training has been completed. If using the WVU option, when at the website, you will enter 5202 at the Key Word field. This will bring up the available courses. PLEASE NOTE: THE TRAINING CERTIFICATE IS VALID FOR ONE (1) YEAR FROM DATE OF COMPLETION ON THE CERTIFICATE. If you have not been selected in a position within that year in a county, you will be required to take the renewal course only again.

For all interested applicants, you must: ? Complete the Professional Application online at . o Please note: all fields with a RED asterisk (*) need to be completed. o You may upload any documentation to the application for employment consideration, i.e. Resume, cover letter, copy of your Teaching Certificate (valid or expired) if you have an education degree. You must also upload a copy of your Substitute Teaching Certificate/observations if you are not a certified teacher.

The on-line application must be completed before you can actually apply for a Professional Substitute Teacher position.

Once the application is complete, you are now able to bid on regular teaching positions (if certified) or day-today substitute teacher positions via the website/application system.

PLEASE NOTE:

As the need arises, Berkeley County Schools advertises for Professional Substitute Teachers on the website. The job that will be advertised will be titled NEW DAY-TO-DAY PROFESSIONAL SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS. The advertising period will be for a minimum of five (5) working days. To apply for a position, you must sign-in to your on-line application. Once you are logged in your application, you need to go to the JOBS tab on your application and view the particular job description details. You must click on "APPLY FOR THIS JOB" button in order to be considered for the position.

Once you have applied for a position and the advertising period has ended: 1. The applications will then be reviewed by the Department Human Resources. 2. If you have been selected, you will be notified, via email, regarding the scheduling of a pre-screening interview. 3. If you have completed the interview successfully, you will be notified of a Substitute Teacher PreEmployment Paperwork Workshop which you will be required to attend. This workshop is set up to complete the necessary paperwork such as license certification (in state or out-of-state) along with the necessary employment forms to get you Board approved as a Professional Substitute Teacher.

4. The Department of Human Resources will review all applicants and submit a final list of names of those individuals who have successfully completed the screening process, including all paperwork that is required, to the Superintendent for consideration and Board of Education approval. No offer of employment is guaranteed until a contract has been approved and issued by the Board of Education. o Successful candidates may not substitute teach until after their names have been approved by the Board. The Board of Education Meetings are normally held on the first and third Monday's of each month.

If you elect not to bid on a position or if you have not been selected, your application will then remain active for up to a year, but you will need to monitor our website for other advertised postings. .

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED OF ALL APPLICANTS:

CREDIT CARDS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF ID!

2. A voided check will be required for direct deposit of your bi-monthly checks.

LICENSING DOCUMENTATION

APPLICANTS WITH A "VALID OR EXPIRED" OUT-OF-STATE LICENSE:

1. A copy of your Out-of-State Teaching License. 2. If your Out-of-State License has been expired five (5) years or longer. Documentation of a Substitute

Teacher Workshop that you attended along with the Certificate and proof of the classroom observations (for a total of 18 hours) conducted by either RESA VIII or West Virginia University is required. 3. Official Transcripts will be required if applying for a WV Teaching Certificate for the first time. COPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE! Electronic Transcripts are acceptable only if emailed directly from the institution to lauren.garrett@k12.wv.us. 4. For a valid (non-expired) out-of-state license, a $100.00 processing fee will be required by the West Virginia Department of Education. Please apply electronically for your WVDE Professional Teaching Certificate via the certification portal . You will need to select form 20-A (reciprocity option). 5. If your license has expired, a $50.00 processing fee will need to made electronically with the West Virginia Department of Education for a Long-Term Substitute Permit (PAPER Form 2L). This is not an electronic form so please make the $50 payment electronically at (Paper form 2L Initial). We will complete the actual form at your paperwork session. Proof of the electronic payment should be brought to your paperwork session.

6. A background clearance conducted by MorphoTrust is required on all employees. You will need to go will be required to make an appointment and pay online ($44.50). Please bring receipt from fingerprinting to your paperwork session.

APPLICANTS WITH A "VALID" WV TEACHING LICENSE:

1. A copy of your WV Teaching License. 2. Official transcripts are only necessary if you have completed additional course work since your

teaching license was issued. HR recommends that you maintain a copy of all transcripts in your personnel file at all times. 3. A background clearance conducted by Identogo is required on all employees. You will need to go . You will be required to make an appointment for a State Print only and will be making your payment to Berkeley County Schools at your employment paperwork workshop ($32.50).

APPLICANTS WITH AN "EXPIRED" WV TEACHING LICENSE:

1. A copy of your expired WV Teaching License. If your WV License has been expired five (5) years or longer, you will need documentation of a Substitute Teacher Workshop that you attended along with the Certificate and proof of the classroom observations (for a total of 18 hours) conducted by either RESA VIII or West Virginia University.

2. For an expired WV Teaching license, a $50.00 processing fee for your initial substitute license will need to made electronically to the West Virginia Department of Education. All payments must be completed online at . You will be required to put your correct form number (Form 2L) in order for it to populate the proper fee. Once you have made your payment, please print out a copy for your records and bring to the workshop

3. A background clearance conducted by MorphoTrust is required on all employees. You will need to go . You will be required to make an appointment for a State Print only and you will be making your payment to Berkeley County Schools at the employment paperwork session ($32.50).

APPLICANTS WITH AN "EXPIRED" WV SUBSTITUTE TEACHER LICENSE:

1. A copy of your expired WV Long-Term Substitute License. Documentation of a Substitute Teacher Workshop that you attended along with the Certificate and proof of the classroom observations (for a total of 18 hours) conducted by either RESA VIII or West Virginia University. This training must have been completed within a year (per WVDE policy). Therefore, if this training is older than 1 year, you must register to attend the training again and cannot be considered a candidate for the current advertised posting.

2. For an expired WV Substitute Permit, a $35.00 processing fee for the renewal of your substitute license will need to made electronically to the West Virginia Department of Education. All payments must be completed online at . You will be required to put your correct form number (Form 2L- Renewal) in order for it to populate the proper fee. Once you have made your payment, please print out a copy for your records and bring to the workshop.

Official Transcripts will be required if applying for a WV Teaching Certificate for the first time. COPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE!
