Sample Research Question: “Are there safety concerns with cell phones?”

To search Academic Search Premier and find articles, do these things:

1. Click in the white box next to Find: and type search term(s). For this example, type cell phones and safety.

2. Click the Search button. See results list. If any result looks interesting, then click the article title to see more information

and an abstract. Then read the abstract to decide if you really want or can use the article.

3. Next, do one of two things: First, if you see HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text*, you may click on these for complete

articles to print, e-mail, or download. Second, if there is no full text online, then to see if an article is here at Kent, first note

the journal’s name, volume number, and page numbers, then click on Find a Copy. In the window that pops up, under

Copies in your Library: you will see if Kent State has the journal and volume you need and the location of the journal.

Most magazines/periodicals are on the second floor of the Main library and arranged alphabetically on the shelves by the

names of magazines/periodicals. Find the one you need by name, then volume number; and take off the shelf to use. Copy

machines are also on the second floor.

If you would like to print a selected list of the articles, then follow these steps (downloading and e-mail also available):

1. As you are looking at the title and abstract for a desired item, click on the Add to Folder button to select the item.

2. Click on Result List to return to list of items found on your computer search; continue choosing desired items.

3. To prepare for printing, downloading, or e-mailing, click on Folder has Items. Next, click on Print to start printing.

4. On the next screen, note choices, and then click the Print button to continue (Step 5 shows printing in the library)

5. In the window that opens, click Print. In the next window type in name, then click Next, and then click OK.

6. Student ID’s (or FLASHcards) are needed to obtain printouts from printers in the Libraries or computer labs.

Other research databases also use the steps you see above, as well as more sophisticated strategies and functions. Ask if you have any questions. *Note: PDFs require Adobe Acrobat Reader software PF:8/04
