Rules of the Game

Basic volleyball rules from

Understanding basic volleyball rules for high school girls is essential for both players and coaches who are looking to excel in the sport. While basic rules help to structure overall game play, there are advanced rules that help officials decide close calls and a unique set of circumstances. Volleyball rules range from out of bounds rules to contact rules.

Before taking the court, there are several essential rules that will help you structure your team as well as position your players. Each team must consist of six players, three players in the front court and three in the back. A ball must be hit to the other side of the court after three hits on the same side. No one player can hit the ball twice in a row. If a serve or shot hits one of the boundary lines on the court, it is ruled in play.

These basic rule violations result in a point for the opposing team. During your serve, stepping across the service line while serving results in a violation. Failing to serve the ball over the net is another rule violation that results in a change of possession. If any player makes contact with the net while the ball is in play, a point is awarded to the other team. Reaching over the net, whether it is to spike the ball or defend a shot, is considered a violation of the rules.

Similar to other sports, unsportsmanlike conduct is penalized in women's high school volleyball. If you are acting improperly during a game, a yellow card can be given to you as a warning. If your first offense is a more serious violation or you have had multiple offenses, a referee can give you a red card, resulting in a change of possession and a point to the opposing team. Three minor violations or two major offenses will result in ejection from the game.

The basic dimensions for a high school girls volleyball court are 29 feet, 6 inches by 59 feet. An attack line should be placed approximately 10 feet from the net on both sides of the court. The net height for a regulation high school game is 7 feet, 4 inches. The ball used during a game should weight between 9 and 10 oz. should contain air pressure of 4 1/2 to 6 lbs.

Junior Charlie Trapp rushed for a season-high 85 yards, including a 49-yard run. Senior Austin Napier added 42 yards and scored on a three-yard touchdown in the game. The Patriot defense played solid with their effort highlighted by a thrilling fourth quarter goal-line stand that gave AC-S a chance in the final period. The Patriots play at Hopkinsville (0-3) Friday.

AC-S volleyball posted a couple more match wins last week. Tuesday, the Patriots defeated the Wildcats of Franklin-Simpson in a three set match. The hosts won the first set 25-15 before AC-S took the final two sets, 25-10 and 25-19. Thursday, the Patriots defeated Warren East 2-0.
